Fractured Cultures and Asian American YouTube Stars

Thanks to KC for this article: In A Small Corner Of YouTube, A Web Star Is Born.  The article is about Asian American YouTube stars–guys like Ryan Higa and Wong Fu, who have huge numbers of viewers but are still a niche group.  It’s part of NPR’s Fractured Culture series, which reports on other niche cultures in this age of the internet and different media channels.

Here’s what the series says about itself:

Call it “disintermediation” or “cultural fragmentation,” but American culture is sliced up in so many ways that what’s popular with one group can go virtually unnoticed by another. NPR’s Fractured Culture series explores life in “a culture of many cultures.”

Ryan Higa, Most Subscribed YouTube Channel of All Time

As some of you know, YouTube is celebrating its fifth year anniversary, and they’re inviting people to share their YouTube stories via video. At the top of the heap is nigahiga with 2 million subscribers. I’m thinking that there are probably also regulars who check out his stuff but don’t necessarily subscribe. That’s a lot of people.
