Beauty and the Ethnic Woman

The beautiful and natural Yunjin Kim

Thanks, King, for sending in these articles: Erasing Ethnicity.

(I google searched for a picture of a blonde haired, blue eyed Asian woman to put on the front-page of this article.  The results were all hideous, so I didn’t bother posting.  So instead y’all get to see a picture of the beautiful and natural Asian American Yunjin Kim who recently decided not to go with the typical marriage trend.  Represent, Yunjin!  Min Jin, you broke my heart; Yunjin, you put it back together!)

Girly Girls, Princesses, and Asian American Women

mulan-32

(pic from here)

I read Emily Co’s piece on AbsolutelyFobulous about the Princess and the Frog, and the implications of ethnic princesses.  In her piece, she writes:

I know we have Mulan and everything, but somehow she doesn’t seem to fit that Disney princess mold. I’m pretty girly, so I’d love to see an Asian princess who traipses around in a poofy dress, preferably wearing a tiara. I just simply didn’t identify with Mulan and I wonder if little Asian girls feel the same way. I can’t really picture them clamoring to wear Mulan’s armor for Halloween when they can don Belle’s yellow froufrou ballgown.

Beauty is only skin deep

Check out the video above (thanks, M!).  Man, that is some scary, scary stuff, especially with the Photoshop techniques that literally distort the picture.  It’s time we get some real people in front of the camera, especially Asian American women.

Single Black Women Adopting

Wendy Duren with her beautiful daughter Madison

Wendy Duren with her beautiful daughter Madison

I saw this beautiful, though somewhat sad, article on CNN today.  Black women are choosing to adopt without waiting for a man to come around.  These black women are successful, strong, and accomplished, but they have not found men who will marry them or treat them with respect.  Many have decided to go ahead and move forward with motherhood.  It’s beautiful because these women are empowered and not allowing society to hold them back, but it’s sad because these men are turning down something good.

Teaching Relationship Skills

This article was referred by skrips of the 44s: Island of Support in the Teen Scene.

It’s a story about a group in Seattle called the Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) that teaches healthy dating and relationship skills to young women at the high school level.  Through the service, women learn how to stop abuse, how to respect themselves, and how to empower themselves.  Plus, they have lots of community support since they work with other young women.

Miss Tibet

Choekyapy, a monk, and Sonam Choedon, Miss Tibet 2008

Even a beauty contest in Tibet is a political issue.

Some of you may disagree with me on this one, but I think beauty contests are important, especially for minorities.  People always talk about image.  Well, this promotes image, doesn’t it?

Plus, this isn’t just a beauty contest; it’s a knowledge contest too:

The heavily made-up contestants wear elaborate gold jewelry and floor-length chubas, traditional Tibetan robes. The pageants include yoga competitions and questions about Buddhist philosophy and Tibetan history. The toughest part is the swimsuit round — in addition to enduring the gawking men, the contestants must weather the mountain chill.
