Perception vs. Substance (Talent, Pt. 3; Alpha-Beta, Pt. 2)

picture-12

Over in the Alphas vs. Betas thread, Robert and King were (were? are? Is Robert still on vacation?) having a discussion on what it means to be “Alpha,” and whether or not the term should even be used among humans. King submits that the term as it applies to animals does not work with humans–humans have so many criteria on how they judge, and there is never only one Alpha male–there are many factors involved, and people’s roles differ depending on the situation.  I volunteered the word “leadership” instead, and Robert opted to use the word “value.”  The conversation moved towards examining the difference between perception and actually being a person of value.  This topic has come up from time to time in diverse posts such as Talent, Hate Crimes, and, of course, PUA–what is the difference between being real and just presenting an image or illusion?

Talent, Pt. 2 (Parable of the Talents) and Countdown to "Justice"

Parable of the Talents

Parable of the Talents

(pic from here)

Will you all still love me if I take a brief vacation from Asian American issues?  I’m taking a break online (although I’m still doing Miss Asian Oregon and the book project in real life).  I need time to educate myself, and I’m excited about our Justice course which begins…drum roll…in less than 24 hours!  I was in Barnes and Noble today with Gun Gun, and I learned that Prof. Sandel also has a book called Justice.  Also, for you peeps in Seattle, Sandel is speaking TODAY (Friday) at the Harvard Club.  It’s sold out, but you can get in front and beg…that’s what I’d do if I were in our great sister city from the North!  (I’m just kidding.  If they’re sold out, they’re sold out.  You can always see him online.)

Disturbing Talent

Check out the video above. Watch the whole thing.

I’ve had this CD for a while, ever since a friend gave it to me as a gift some seven or eight years back. Noriyuki Makihara’s tunes are catchy, and the instrumentals are quite unique.  He’s quite talented.  On a whim, I decided to search for him on youtube, and the video above came up. At first, I was thinking, man, that female actress is extremely photogenic. Then I was thinking, wow, that is highly disturbing. And then I was thinking, wow, that’s REALLY disturbing. I must’ve watched this video seven times.

Teaching, Learning, Promoting through the Internet

I use the web every day, but I’m only beginning to learn how powerful it can be. See the video above, where Jane Lui plays a solid original tune. Pretty hard jazz chords, no? Well, you can learn to play Jane’s original tune–from Jane herself. See below:

If you liked Marie Digby’s song in my Marie Digby post, you can also learn to play it from the songwriter herself (at 1:50):
