UFC this past weekend, UFC next weekend (predictions)

This past weekend:

It looks like Takanori Gomi, the Fireball Kid, is back.  He knocked out Tyson Griffin in the very first round this past Saturday with a vicious swinging haymaker.  I seriously thought the guy was past his prime, but he was aggressive the whole time, and with a win over a top fighter like Griffin, he could soon be back in contention.  I was very surprised by how hard he was going at it–I thought for sure that his confidence had been destroyed years ago.

Envy and Condemnation

Kenny Florian from USA Today

Takanori Gomi lost by rear naked choke to Kenny Florian on Spike TV last night.  I wanted to see him fight, although I knew he was somewhat past his prime.  I didn’t realize exactly how past his prime he was.

I always get filled with envy when I watch Japanese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Thai, and Korean fighters go at it.  Guys of Chinese descent haven’t had a championship level fighter since Bruce.  Meanwhile, fighters like Penn, Machida, Cung Le, Pacquiao, Hakuho, etc are tearing it up in all fighting sports.  To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a Chinese male world champion fighter in MMA, boxing, judo, jujitsu, Muay Thai, wrestling, or sumo–basically all the fighting sports that matter.
