Sam Yoon moving to DC
Sam Yoon, as many of you know, ran for mayor of Boston last year. As the first Asian American on the Boston city council, the first Asian American to run for public office in Boston, and the first Asian American politician to win public office in Boston, I was very excited for his candidacy. Sam podcasted with bigWOWO last year, and we raised money for his campaign.
John Liu elected Comptroller of New York City/Elections

John Liu
Congratulations to John Liu who was elected Comptroller of New York City tonight:
Liu easily defeated his Republican challenger Joe Mendola in the race for city comptroller, making him the first Asian-American elected to citywide office.
“Indeed, this is a historic night for New York City and a milestone for Asian-Americans across the nation,” Liu said. “I’m truly humble to have this place in history. And I stand here extremely optimistic about the opportunity to bring change to New York City and about the economic outlook of our future.”

Our Sam Yoon Campaign
I wanted to give us a little time to bask in our one year birthday before business as usual. Thanks again, everyone, for making this place what it is.
So…back to business. As I’m sure some of you already know, Sam Yoon lost last night. He had 21% of the vote compared to Michael Flaherty’s 24%, so Flaherty will be running against Menino in November. Not only did he lose the mayoral race, but he also now becomes a lame duck councilor who will lose his seat in January. You can see his concession speech above (or here if the embedded video doesn’t work). As all of you know, bigWOWO readers contributed $250 for Sam, and we were working hard to get him a win.
We hit our Sam Yoon goal!
Thanks to Asianguy, TMM, and uRB4N who helped bigWOWO achieve its goal of raising $250 for Sam Yoon. This was the first goal that we as a website have set, and we did it! Special thanks to uRB4N who contributed over 85% of the funds! Thanks to everyone here who publicized for Sam, to everyone who discussed Sam, and to everyone who has kept this website going strong. The vast majority of us are from out of state, and I’m so happy that we were able to help Sam in his campaign.

Give to Sam Yoon
I missed the August deadline (sorry Sagar), but the election is just 20 days away. If you are an American who has five or ten bucks to spare, please visit bigwowo’s fundraising page and drop a few Washingtons and Lincolns in the bucket. Sam really does need your money, and Asian America really does need strong, responsible leaders like Sam Yoon. Give up your Starbucks for two days, and you could help Sam make history. To see my previous fundraising post on why I’m supporting Sam, go here.
Sam Yoon: bigWOWO's Fundraising Page
You all heard my Sam Yoon podcast a while back. He’s clearly one of the coolest politicians to hit the scene in a long time. I was originally planning to throw a big wine event in Portland to help him raise money, but after soliciting feedback from the local Portlanders, it would be hard to generate the kind of interest we want–people in Portland care about politics in Portland, not Boston. I’d be stuck with gallons of wine, and I’d be drunk for the next year (which may not necessarily be a bad thing with this economy).
The Boston Phoenix, Media Racism, and Sam Yoon

Racist imagery, courtesy of the Boston Phoenix
Thanks to SEFTRE, who found this. The Boston Phoenix ran an article on Friday about how Yoon and Menino are competing over the Boston Asian vote, and they accompanied the article with the photo on the right, a graphic of Menino in a Chinese takeout box labeled “Yoon for Mayor.”
Podcast: Sam Yoon, Candidate for Mayor of Boston

Sam Yoon and Family
Today I had a podcast with Sam Yoon, Candidate for Mayor of Boston. Intern Sagar Sane, who made all the arrangements for the podcast and who is helping with internet publicity, was also present. The podcast is 46 minutes and 13 seconds long. For those who are following my ridiculous ongoing battle to get GarageBand ’08 to import large files directly to mp3, this time I WON, and the podcast is a sleek and slim 21.2 megs. Download it here, or listen to it here:
