Fractured Cultures and Asian American YouTube Stars

Thanks to KC for this article: In A Small Corner Of YouTube, A Web Star Is Born.  The article is about Asian American YouTube stars–guys like Ryan Higa and Wong Fu, who have huge numbers of viewers but are still a niche group.  It’s part of NPR’s Fractured Culture series, which reports on other niche cultures in this age of the internet and different media channels.

Here’s what the series says about itself:

Call it “disintermediation” or “cultural fragmentation,” but American culture is sliced up in so many ways that what’s popular with one group can go virtually unnoticed by another. NPR’s Fractured Culture series explores life in “a culture of many cultures.”

Agents of Secret Stuff

Happy Belated Thanksgiving, and for you Chinese people, happy day-after-Thanksgiving-jook-day! I forgot to stock up on pei-dan, so my jook day is probably not going to be as good as yours.

If you’re in the mood for good free entertainment, check out the video above: Agents of Secret Stuff, produced by Wong Fu Productions, starring Ryan Higa (from Niga Higa) and Arden Cho. It’s a fun romantic comedy.  The entire film was shot with a DSLR camera (I keep telling my wife we need one); pretty inspiring that they were able to create such a high quality picture with minimal equipment and a small budget.  Check out Wong Fu’s A.S.S. page to learn about the background of the project.  I really love how these guys are making projects and putting them out there for everyone to see.

Ryan Higa, Most Subscribed YouTube Channel of All Time

As some of you know, YouTube is celebrating its fifth year anniversary, and they’re inviting people to share their YouTube stories via video. At the top of the heap is nigahiga with 2 million subscribers. I’m thinking that there are probably also regulars who check out his stuff but don’t necessarily subscribe. That’s a lot of people.

Check out his story below.
