To Be or Not To Be (A Rice Chaser)

There’s an interesting article and video feature (see above) in the Times today about White guys who go to Thailand to find love and who eventually stay there.  According to the article, the Western men are looking for “accommodating” Thai women, while Thai women are looking for money and stability.  According to the article, the phenomenon of Western Guy/Thai Woman is taking off.

“There are villages in Isaan that are almost entirely comprising foreign houses, where the whole village is almost entirely houses purchased by foreigners for their Thai ladies,” said Phil Nicks, author of “Love Entrepreneurs: Cross-Culture Relationship Deals in Thailand.”

Rice Chasers and Their Victims

The Minority Militant recently posted this blog post about Balloon Boy and his mother Mayumi and father Richard.  In his blog post, he links this article:  Balloon Boy Mom: Co-Conspirator or Abused Wife?

As I pointed out in my comment on TMM’s blog, Richard Heene, father of Balloon Boy, has some cultural issues that he’s quite open with.  From the article:

“It’s a cultural thing, and he leveraged that knowledge,” Stevens said. “He believed that Asian women can be subservient, and that’s what he wanted. But it takes two to tango, and she was with him for more than a decade. Every day that was the dynamic in play.”
