Satoshi Kanazawa Says Black Women Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women

Thanks to N’Jaila Rhee, who posted an article from Psychology Today that looks like it has since been taken down from their website.  It was called Why Are Black Women Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women, and it was written by Satoshi Kanazawa, who, as most of you know, is a prominent evolutionary psychologist at the London School of Economics.  I unfortunately didn’t get a chance to read it on the original site, but I saw tons of comments and blog posts by people who had, and I have no reason to doubt that it was up there.   Being the age of the internet, someone copied it before it went down.  You can read it here, and I’m going to repost it below (I think I can legally do this since it’s no longer available at the source.  If not, I’ll take it down.).  Kanazawa gets all “scientific,” and his “science” becomes his fact.  He doesn’t stop to think that the social sciences rarely if ever provide universal truths, and yet he accepts them as such:

An Easy Activist Action to Protest Apple’s Exclusion of Asian Men

Woo hoo!  Lots of people read the post about Apple and the AF/WM theme in their advertising.  I said that I would write them a letter about including more Asian men, and I finally did.  See below–I sent it to Steve Jobs and Philip Schiller this morning.  I have no idea whether they’ll do anything about it, but I figure it’s worth a shot.  There was some ignorance on my part of how the media/acting industry operates, so special thanks to Minority Militant and Philip from You Offend Me You Offend My Family for helping a brother out.

The Real Stuff White People Like

Thanks, MN, TZ, and Ben for sending this.

OK Cupid compiled lists of profiles and broke them down by race.  You can read the article to see how people of different genders and races like to describe themselves and their interests and hobbies.  In terms of Asian behavior, the most significant finding that the surveyors pointed out is that Asian people tend to be less flashy.

As you can see, both Asian men and women choose I’m simple as their go-to self-description. Contrast this to black men’s I am cool and Latinos’ I’m a funny guy. It’s also interesting that Asian men very often mention their specific heritage (taiwan, korea, singapore, vietnam, china) while Asian women don’t.

Obama: Arrest an innocent black man and get invited to the White House

picture-11

This is why I think Obama will be a good president, not a great president. In this case we have a cop with a temper who was clearly in the wrong, who abused his authority by arresting a harmless old African American man outside of his own home, and now Obama is inviting that same dirty cop to the White House.  Why not just invite Marc Fuhrman from the OJ trial?  What about the guys who raped Abner Louima?  Even if Gates overreacted, Crowley is clearly in the wrong.  He’s a cop and should know how to behave.  Not only does his police report reek of inaccuracies and inconsistencies, but he arrested an old man who posed no danger to him whatsoever.  It’s an abuse of authority, and the president has invited this thug to the White House.  Unbelievable.

Jail cell or hotel room?

The NY Times Magazine has an excellent feature on Infrastructure this week (6/14/09).  They talk about a bunch of exciting topics related to the infrastructure of our society, such as form vs. function, trains, and data centers.  The second most interesting article to me was the data center article.  I used to work in a data center before the first tech crash, and it brought back memories, plus it raised questions about how computing and information is changing.  As the developing world continues to modernize, we’re going to need more and more servers.  The article also made me think about the fact that I have no idea where bigWOWO lives. :)

Sotomayor vs. Thomas

Clarence Thomas and Sonia Sotomayor during their college days

Clarence Thomas and Sonia Sotomayor during their college days

Today the NY Times had a very fair and balanced (if I’m allowed to use the term) comparison between Clarence Thomas’s and Sonia Sotomayor’s biographies and views on race.  It presents a three dimensional view of both people.

As you all know, I don’t know if I necessarily support Sotomayor’s nomination, but I do think the fact that she is a Latina will help provide a greater richness to the decisions and opinions of the Supreme Court.  I think it’s important for the nation’s government to look like and to share the experiences of the people it serves.  It broadens her perspective, and her presence will broaden the perspective of the Court.  Against an “equally qualified” White man, I would support her, although I put “equally qualified” in quotes since I believe her diversity is a qualification.

"What Color is That Baby?"

babies

(picture from here)

Bob Herbert writes a poignant Op-Ed about media coverage and race in today’s NY Times.

“What color is that baby?” he asked.

A tremendous silence fell over the room. Everyone understood what he meant. If the baby was white, the chances were much better that the story was worth big play. It might be something to get excited about.
