George Katagiri: Heroes

George Katagiri in 1951

George Katagiri in 1951

This is the kind of story that I find interesting.

George Katagiri (grandfather of Zach, who is on this blog and the co-owner of Peachyhost, which houses Thymos.org) was the elementary and high school teacher of Joan Harvey, a reporter for the Oregonian.  Harvey recounts how whenever her district administrators would ask her to write down the names of her best teachers, she would write, “”Mr. Katagiri, Mr. Katagiri and Mr. Katagiri.”

Check out the story.  George Katagiri was controversial from the start:

Crime in Portland (Retraction)

Update: I have access to private information about this incident, and I no longer want to call this a hate crime. A crime may have occurred, but it may not have been a hate crime, at least not according to information I now have.  I really don’t want to say any more publicly, but I’m putting this temporarily on the top of the page because I need to protect the integrity of bigWOWO.  It was a hard decision because I’m doing this based on privileged info.  If you want to discuss or learn more, we can talk by phone.  You all know where to reach me.

Some of the stuff I'm working on

As I mentioned in my last post about the Thymos book project, I finished my submission.  Actually, I finished my first submission.  I enjoyed writing it so much that I’m now working on a second submission.  My second submission is an essay about why Asian American literature is different from mainstream lit, how it is similar to mainstream lit, and how I hope Asian Americans can join the dialogue when it comes to human issues, even though our situation is very unique.  I’ve already rewritten the first page at least three times, so blog posts will continue to be more sporadic than usual.

Stay at home dad groups

Portland Dads at Home

I learned of this group maybe a month ago, but they got written up in the Oregonian just this past week. Check out the article here.

I’ve communicated with some of these guys through e-mail, and they seem very nice. I think it’s a great idea for dads to do community activities like this, even those of us who aren’t Stay-at-Home-Dads. We humans are communal animals, and kids have so much more fun when they’re playing with and surrounded by other kids. If Eric, the guy in the video, had success in a small city like Portland, I can imagine that forming a dad’s group would be possible in other cities as well.

Size Matters

For those who don’t know, I’m trying hard to get into shape.  I’ve got an athletic competition coming up later this summer, so I’ve been running more than I’ve ever run before.  I can now do 5 miles in one outing–prior to this summer, my maximum had been two.  My goal is to be able to run 5 miles 3 times within a day.  In achieving this goal, I’m also trying to get my weight down from 170 to 150.  I have a bad knee, so this most likely will be a one shot deal, and after this summer, I’ll have to find other ways to keep in shape.

Portland Cheap Eating

27958256They had an interesting article on Portland cheap eats yesterday in the NY Times.  I’ve eaten at the stands before, but I seriously never knew that it extended that deep.  If any of you visit Portland, I know where I’m taking you.

I need to try that blue burger in the video.  I think my own burgers are the best in the world–I know I’m better than anything I’ve found so far–but I always welcome competition!

Golden Swan, RIP

I drove all the way out to the other side of Beaverton to eat at my favorite restaurant, the Golden Swan. Few people in Portland know of the Golden Swan. It’s a hole in the wall–the place has no central heating, there’s a quarter inch of grease on all the tables, and the floor gets cleaned once a month. Plus the name of the restaurant changes every couple years, probably because the authorities shut it down for health violations.

Bamboo

Check out this awesome CNN video on bamboo. Bamboo is awesome. It’s a form of grass, it grows really quickly, and according to the video, it absorbs quite a bit of carbon dioxide. It’s strong, durable, and it looks cool.  Check out the video to see what people can build with bamboo.  And it’s not just Asian people who are into it!

Portland, the Whitest Big City in the West

whitestcities

Thanks, Larry, for this article from the Oregonian.  My goodness, we’re whiter than Nashville!  We should start our own country music scene here.

This part of the article describes the cultural issues accurately:

Portland-area employers competing for top talent have a hard time retaining African American hires, who often can’t bear the social and cultural isolation of a metro area that is less than 3 percent black.

“A lot of my friends and other minorities come here to Portland thinking of it as a stopover,” says Angel Anderson, an African American software engineer from suburban Chicago who was recruited by Intel. “They leave the state in a year or two.”
