California Apologizes to Chinese Americans

(Thanks to D in HK for sending this!)

On July 17th, 2009, the California legislature approved a bill that apologized for racist laws against Chinese Americans during the mid nineteenth century.  According to the article:

The laws, some of which were not repealed until the 1940s, barred Chinese from owning land or property, marrying whites, working in the public sector and testifying against whites in court. The new bill also recognizes the contributions Chinese immigrants have made to the state, particularly their work on the Transcontinental Railroad.

Thanks to SEFTRE, who found this.  The Boston Phoenix ran an article on Friday about how Yoon and Menino are competing over the Boston Asian vote, and they accompanied the article with the photo on the right, a graphic of Menino in a Chinese takeout box labeled “Yoon for Mayor.”

Podcast: Sam Yoon, Candidate for Mayor of Boston

Sam Yoon and Family

Today I had a podcast with Sam Yoon, Candidate for Mayor of Boston.  Intern Sagar Sane, who made all the arrangements for the podcast and who is helping with internet publicity, was also present.  The podcast is 46 minutes and 13 seconds long.  For those who are following my ridiculous ongoing battle to get GarageBand ’08 to import large files directly to mp3, this time I WON, and the podcast is a sleek and slim 21.2 megs.  Download it here, or listen to it here:

Sarah Palin Resigning

Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin

It looks like Sarah Palin will be stepping down from her post as Governor of Alaska.  Believe it or not, people are actually saying that she’s doing so in order to lay the groundwork for a shot at the presidency.  Unbelievable.  If you look at the announcement on her own website, it’s clear that she either can’t write, or she hired a ghost writer who is unable to write.  That’s pretty bad for someone who claims to have read “all” the newspapers.  The scary thing is that after Ensign and Sanford got tripped up with their infidelity, she may actually be a GOP frontrunner.  I’m all for watching the GOP stumble, trip, and embarass themselves over the inane nonsense that they’ve put us through, but come on.  If Palin is the frontrunner, it’s hard to make the argument that we’re truly living in a two-party system.

Sotomayor vs. Thomas

Clarence Thomas and Sonia Sotomayor during their college days

Clarence Thomas and Sonia Sotomayor during their college days

Today the NY Times had a very fair and balanced (if I’m allowed to use the term) comparison between Clarence Thomas’s and Sonia Sotomayor’s biographies and views on race.  It presents a three dimensional view of both people.

As you all know, I don’t know if I necessarily support Sotomayor’s nomination, but I do think the fact that she is a Latina will help provide a greater richness to the decisions and opinions of the Supreme Court.  I think it’s important for the nation’s government to look like and to share the experiences of the people it serves.  It broadens her perspective, and her presence will broaden the perspective of the Court.  Against an “equally qualified” White man, I would support her, although I put “equally qualified” in quotes since I believe her diversity is a qualification.

That Gravitational Pull

Sandra Day O'Connor being sworn in, 1981

Sandra Day O'Connor being sworn in, 1981

The NY Times had a good article on how minority judges change the dynamics of how a committee operates.  They start with Thurgood Marshall, who was the first non-white male Supreme Court Justice, and then they move to talk about Ginsburg and O’Connor.  The article discusses how the mere presence of a minority changes the way the club operates.  Even Scalia noted the influence.

But the other justices did get to know Justice Marshall, and even the more conservative ones acknowledged that his very presence exerted a gravitational pull more powerful than his single vote.

Gingrich calls Sotomayor "racist"

artnewtSee CNN story here.

When are these Repubs going to realize how pointless their accusations are?  107 of 111 Supreme Court justices have been White men.  43 of 44 U.S. Presidents have been White men.  The vast majority of Fortune 500 CEOs are White men.  Before Pelosi, ALL of the Speakers of the House, Mr. Gingrich, were White men.  To make it seem like the playing field is equal when the playing field is clearly unequal would strike any rational person as being incorrect.

Her experience is different from yours, Mr. Gingrich.  If they had more people like her in positions of power, you would probably realize this.

Rummy

Thanks to Micah who sent this article

It scares the hell out of me whenever I write posts that contain the tags “religion” and “politics” together.  But thanks to eight years of Bush, I get the opportunity to post such things over and over.  In the latest news, it appears that Donald Rumsfeld, the Defense Secretary of the United States during the Iraqi invasion, used to “curry favor” with President George W. Bush by writing “militaristic passages from the Bible on the cover pages of White House intelligence documents.”  For example:

Senator Arlen Specter Switches Parties

Wow.  This is huge news.  I’m…in shock.

I think the Republicans are going to have to work really hard on their message.  Obviously it’s not working, even for their most loyal and powerful leaders.  I think Specter’s decision to jump is going to have at least some kind of domino effect on the rest of the party.
