Black Sheep of the Blogosphere

I know you, you know me
I’m the black sheep of the family,
I’m in an’ out of trouble
I’m the talk of the town
I get wild in the street
When the sun goes down
I steal around, like a thief in the night
Dancing ’til the break of day

Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

Obama

Obama

While I think it’s cool that Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize, I wonder…for what?

His presidency just started.  So far he hasn’t achieved much of what he has promised–troops are still in Iraq, we still have Guantanamo, we’re still in the worst economic state since the 1930′s, etc.  In terms of race relations, he has not stepped up the plate when he could have.  He has revealed racism by being who he is, but that’s more a function of who he is rather than what he’s done.  I’m not saying that I expected anything within eight months–I’m still overall positive and hopeful–but I think the award comes way too early.

John Liu Wins Democratic Nomination for Comptroller

30elect_650

John Liu won the Democratic nomination for City Comptroller of New York City yesterday.  Because New York City is controlled by the Democrats, this basically assures him a victory in the November election.  Assuming he wins, he’ll be the first Asian American to hold elected city-wide office in New York City.  I’ve seen Liu speak before, and he’s the real deal.  He does his job well, and he’s outspoken on Asian American issues.

His new job is going to be a pretty serious responsibility:

Sex, Lies, and Paternity

John Edwards

John Edwards

Good thing this guy didn’t win.

From CNN:

Former Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards talked a campaign aide into claiming he fathered a child born to Edwards’ onetime mistress, sources familiar with the issue said Monday.

Edwards admitted to his affair with Rielle Hunter in August 2008 after months of denials, but said he could not have been the father of Hunter’s daughter, who was born the previous February. Former Edwards staffer Andrew Young has said he was the girl’s father — but has recanted and says he made it because he believed in Edwards, lawyers and others familiar with the matter told CNN.

We hit our Sam Yoon goal!

Thanks to Asianguy, TMM, and uRB4N who helped bigWOWO achieve its goal of raising $250 for Sam Yoon.  This was the first goal that we as a website have set, and we did it!  Special thanks to uRB4N who contributed over 85% of the funds!  Thanks to everyone here who publicized for Sam, to everyone who discussed Sam, and to everyone who has kept this website going strong.  The vast majority of us are from out of state, and I’m so happy that we were able to help Sam in his campaign.

The Right to Die

The Putticks

The Putticks

I’ve seen a number of interesting articles on suicide recently, and I was interested in whether the readers here had any opinions.  First, there was this sad story that I saw on BicoastalBitchin–a cute little boy dies of an infection, and his distraught parents kill themselves by jumping off a 500 foot cliff (see pic above).  Then, there was the story of the eminent orchestra conductor Sir Edward Downes, who killed himself in order to die with his terminally ill wife.  Then yesterday, there was the story of a man in Britain who was jailed for giving his terminally ill father a gun to kill himself.  Along the way, there was also the story of Ron Takaki, pre-eminent Asian American historian, who killed himself ostensibly over an illness.

Most Red Ink Ever

I’m not an economist, but my gut instinct tells me that this isn’t going to work in the long term…

In a chilling forecast, the White House is predicting a 10-year federal deficit of $9 trillion — more than the sum of all previous deficits since America’s founding. And it says by the next decade’s end the national debt will equal three-quarters of the entire U.S. economy.
