Boy Bias in Asian American Families?

This one surprised me.  Evidently, there is a boy bias in Asian American births, namely Chinese American, Korean American, and Indian American births.  According to the article:

In general, more boys than girls are born in the United States, by a ratio of 1.05 to 1. But among American families of Chinese, Korean and Indian descent, the likelihood of having a boy increased to 1.17 to 1 if the first child was a girl, according to the Columbia economists. If the first two children were girls, the ratio for a third child was 1.51 to 1 — or about 50 percent greater — in favor of boys.

The Crash

If anyone does not know the Minority Militant, go over to his blog right now and check him out. Or, you can check out my interview with him here. He’s had an interesting life as a Laotian immigrant who joined the U.S. Navy right after college, and he runs a great blog. I read it every day.

Taking Aim at Tenure

I first read about Michelle Rhee a while ago when she was first being considered for the chancellor position in public schools.  At the time, the brouhaha was over whether or not an Asian woman should be considered for a position that oversees schools that have large African American populations, but because she had ample support, she was able to overcome.

Dying Media

Because the current financial crisis concerns credit, the current financial crisis is affecting just about everyone. Media, however, has been weathering a crisis ever since news went on the internet. To see how bad it is, check out this article, today from the NY Times.

On Tuesday, The Christian Science Monitor announced that, after a century, it would cease publishing a weekday paper. Time Inc., the Olympian home of Time magazine, Fortune, People and Sports Illustrated, announced that it was cutting 600 jobs and reorganizing its staff. And Gannett, the largest newspaper publisher in the country, compounded the grimness by announcing it was laying off 10 percent of its work force — up to 3,000 people.

Two in a Row

The New York Times has outdone itself. Last week, they had a video segment on Aimee and Ping, which I blogged about here in the Art of the Neg. As I mentioned, that was the first time I’ve ever seen a video segment on two Asian Americans married. Usually they’ll cover Asian American weddings…just as long as the guy is white.

But after breaking tradition last week, the NY Times did it again with the story of Rachel and Julius, two Filipino American newlyweds, where the man makes a video for the woman. It’s very romantic, but…what is going on here? Is the world turning upside down? Or is the New York Times embracing a new kind of ethnic diversity in its news coverage?

A really bad Disney movie

As you can see from the opening lines, this was early in the campaign:

…but unfortunately, this happened just today:

I don’t know what to say, other than Matt Damon called it right. It’s “a really bad Disney movie.” The debate, of course, is coming up tomorrow, and it should be interesting watching a seasoned politician like Biden debating against someone who has absolutely no interest in economics or foreign policy. Still, Biden has to be careful as a clash in styles between him and Palin could get him into trouble.
