The Morning Benders

Thanks to Jeff from 8Asians who posted about the Morning Benders. These guys are really good, and their sound is unique. Unique is a good thing; I find that a lot of bands these days sound the same. Check them out. It looks like there is an Asian American lead singer, at least one other Asian American guy in the band, and the music is good.

I went on YouTube and listened to a few of their tracks. This song is my favorite, and the video is pretty cool too:

How to Make Music Videos Starring Asian Guys

(Edit 12/25/10: See P2H’s points about it being a matter of taste here.  It could be that Siow’s video is part of a genre that appealed less to both me and the original person who sent this.  It clearly isn’t universal, and it probably shouldn’t be universal.  :)   As always, it’s good to get awesome comments.  Thanks also to King, Crazy MM’er, and N!)

Atomic Tom and the viral iPhone video

Thanks to Zach Katagiri, co-owner of Peachyhost, for telling me about Atomic Tom and their subway performance.  I think there’s a Filipino dude in this vid, so maybe it’s even Asian American related (I’m guessing.).  Check out the story here.  They performed a song using their iPhones as instruments; apparently there’s an Ap for drums, keyboards, guitar, and voice!  It’s a great song, a great performance, and an awesome use of technology.

Sheesh, Steve Jobs, put this Asian guy in your Apple ads!

Mondega: For the People (Review)

bigWOWO Music Review

Thank you to Lac Su, who sent me a copy of Mondega: For the People.  I’ve known of Mondega for a while now, but I never listened to his music, mainly because I’m not a great critic of hip hop.  I don’t know the history, can’t draw comparisons with other artists, etc.  But I’m sooo glad that Lac sent me his album. Even if I can’t dissect it like a musical pro, I can at least tell you what I liked about it.  I think this is the first Asian American musician I’ve written about.

WTF Video of the Day: Another Day by Monkey Majik

Monkey Majik is one of the most musically and rhythmically talented bands I’ve heard recently. And they keep me guessing. I wasn’t sure if the video of “Another Day” (above) was an OMG video, a WTF video, or a LOL video. Imagine the question: “So Honey, how was work today?” Japanese guys: beware of imaginary White chicks in bikinis. :)

My Favorite New Japanese Pop Band is White

Checkee outtee the video above. This is the first band out of Japan since M-Flo to really knock me down with their sound. Not that I hear much Japanese music these days–there’s something morally wrong about paying $40 for CD, which is what those Japanese record companies gouge, I mean, charge, us Americans.  I learned about Monkey Majik after youtubing an M-Flo collaboration (check out the m-flo link…they can rap too!).  Monkey Majik, according to wiki, is half white.

Monkey Majik is a Japanese pop-rock band formed in 2000, consisting of two Canadian brothers (Maynard and Blaise Plant) and two Japanese members (Tax and Dick).

Singing by oneself

I saw the video above on AAM.  It’s a video of Sam Tsui, who is Yale student, and who made a Michael Jackson medley with his friend Kurt Schneider (the guy on the left doing the beat box thing).    It’s Sam Tsui times six, with Kurt doing the beats.  The first time I heard someone sing by himself on separate tracks was when Bobby McFerrin recorded Don’t Worry, Be Happy.  Sam and Kurt’s piece is pretty cool though because of the visuals.  How do they make a video like that?

Also check out their rendition of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing:

Zee Avi

Saw this video of Zee Avi on Youtube.  Her music is the Spotlight Tuesday music selection for YouTube.  She’s got a powerful voice with some pretty cool, happy tunes. It’s one of the coolest collections I’ve heard in a long time. Zee Avi is from Malaysia, and her debut CD is coming out today.  Check it out!

The Ever Wistful Jaehwan

(Music above is Eye in the Sky by the Alan Parsons Project.  It’s what I’m listening to right now.)
