Jones-Machida Inspires My Hunger for Vocabulary

Schadenfreude. It means pleasure at someone else’s misfortune. It’s German. English has no word for it, although English speakers most certainly feel it.

I’m at a loss after Jon Jones choked Lyoto Machida unconscious. And it has troubled me, because I don’t have words to express what I’m feeling. Somewhere in some language there must be vocabulary to express the sentiments:

1. Jon Jones: There must be a word to indicate my feelings towards him. “I dislike his arrogant personality but I like his arrogant martial arts style so I might as well deal with it,” therefore I feel **** about him.

Hockey Enforcers and Head Injuries

I don’t even watch hockey, but I saw this long, 36 minute (in total) NY Times feature on the life of Derek Boogard, an “enforcer” in professional hockey who died at the age of 28 after overdosing on pain meds from his numerous injuries. He was 6’7, 245 lbs., and he wasn’t such a great hockey player, but he was able to fight, and so he had a contract worth $1.6 million just to throw punches and rev his team up. If you have kids, if you watch contact sports, check it out. They say MMA is brutal, but these guys fight 40 or 50 times a year, wearing no head protection or gloves. This is much more dangerous, much worse.

Chan Sung Jung the “Korean Zombie” and the Twister

Thanks, Danny Lee, for pointing me to the awesome “twister” submission by Chan Sung Jung, the Korean Zombie, this weekend in his win over Leonard Garcia. For you hardcore MMA fans, this was supposed to be Nam Phan’s shot at redemption after his very controversial loss to Garcia last year. Unfortunately, Phan was injured and couldn’t fight, so Chan Sung Jung, another recipient of a bad decision against Garcia, got his shot at redemption.

Chan won by a twister, the first ever twister in the UFC.  You can see the picture above.  The twister is a neck crank, a modified wrestling move popularized by Eddie Bravo.  If you want to learn how to do it yourself, see Eddie Bravo’s instructional here:

UFC 127: Dana White Says BJ Won, Michael Bisping Proves He’s an Affirmative Action Case

I had a long conversation this weekend with a friend about UFC, and I came to the conclusion that all sports are the same–unless you know the styles/personalities behind the players, it’s boring because there is simply no drama.  With the UFC this past weekend, there was plenty of drama.  Two fights in particular were interesting.

Bullying, Gracie Jujitsu, and the Gracie Bullyproof DVD Program (Review)

I saw this article in the Christian Science Monitor about a woman whose child was bullied.  She responded by taking her child to learn Gracie Jujitsu, where they have a program called Bullyproof.  She took her son to the park after he learned GJJ, and what followed was some scary behavior on her son’s part, which this woman not only condones but praises!  While I appreciate everything that the Gracies have done for Mixed Martial Arts (my favorite spectator sport by far) and martial arts in general, I’m not in agreement with how they teach children to verbally deal with bullies.  See here:

Should Lyoto retire?

This is an interesting video.  ESPN talks to Lyoto Machida’s father Shinzo and asks if Lyoto should retire.  Shinzo says that Lyoto should retire, that he has spoken with the rest of his family about his opinion but has yet to raise the issue with Lyoto.

I think part of the reason Yoshizo wants him to retire is that Lyoto is Yoshizo’s son.  It must be hard watching your son getting beaten up by a fighter like Shogun Rua.  The interesting part for me, however, was at the end, when Yoshizo talks about spirit, and how physical injuries heal quick while injuries to the spirit can take years to recover. This was exactly why I was calling for Machida to fight someone very easy in his next outing.  (This, of course, is pretty hard to find.  That 205 division is stacked with talent.)

UFC 116 Recap

Max is right: I’m consistently wrong on this MMA prediction business.  I said Akiyama would beat Leben by decision.  He lost by triangle choke in the third round.  I said Carwin would beat Lesnar by TKO in the second round.  He lost to Lesnar by an arm triangle in the second round.  My friend, with whom I was watching it, said that I was close.  If Akiyama had lasted another 20 seconds, he probably would’ve won by decision–and Leben agrees.  Carwin came close to knocking out Lesnar in round one.  But all in all, I was wrong…again.

UFC 116 Predictions/Update on MMA

Cung Le beating on Scott Smith

The big news this past weekend was that Cung Le avenged his loss to Scott Smith at Strikeforce. He won by TKO in the second round with a vicious spinning back kick to the mid-section.  Scott Smith wants a rematch, but even if he gets it, I think it will go the same way.  Cung Le was just tired the first time around, and quite honestly, I don’t think he cares anymore; he’d rather go to Hollywood.

Strikeforce Post-fight Brawl

In slow motion:

First, a quick comment about the fights last night. I was WAY off. I called three fights, and I got none of them right. Aoki, according to the ringside announcers, didn’t train in a cage, which is incredible but believable, given his atrocious performance last night. Mousasi couldn’t defend against a simple double leg takedown, which is also ridiculous. Henderson got gassed really early. It was a pathetic night for MMA to begin with.

Strikeforce Saturday (tomorrow) night on CBS

Shinya Aoki

(pic from here)

After those shenanigans by Anderson Silva last week, I’m betting that many MMA fans will be turning in to Strikeforce tomorrow (Saturday) night.  Strikeforce pays their fighters well.  I don’t know if they hold events often enough to build a following, but if you want to see superior martial arts, tune in tomorrow night.

Tomorrow’s event should be awesome.  Dan Henderson will be fighting, as will Gegard Mousasi.  Both are impressive fighters, and I expect both to win.  Henderson’s fight should be relatively easy.  Mousasi is a beast who would give Lyoto a run for his money.  He’s a knockout master.  (Sorry Lyoto…you do know that I’m your biggest fan.)
