Gwen Stefani and her Muse

I can’t stop watching the video above. It’s perfect in every sense of the word–beautiful scenery, beautiful actors and actresses, beautiful melody, beautiful lyrics, beautiful acting, and very human. I must admit that I have not had the exact experience depicted in the clip–though probably something similar–but wow…after watching the clip, I feel like I was right there.  What an amazing story.

African Americans and Martial Arts

Jaden Smith

Jaden Smith

Thanks to Leon, who sent this article written by RiceDaddy Jeff Yang.  In the article, Yang addresses the backlash against Jaden Smith’s starring role as the new Karate Kid by retelling the story of how African Americans were instrumental in promoting the martial arts in America.

So just three quick comments:

1. I thought the article was very good from a historical perspective.  I knew that African Americans had been active–I remember Malcolm’s proclamation that all African American males should study karate and judo–but I didn’t know the details.  I thank Jeff and Leon for educating me.

Miss Asian Oregon

mao

Okay, time for an exciting announcement. I am the co-owner of the Miss Asian Oregon Pageant, and we will be having our inaugural event on October 10th, 2009 down in Salem. My partner Michelle is a former contestant/finalist and law firm owner, and we are totally psyched about doing this. Our emcee/organizer Liani is a prominent public official and lawyer activist. We now have all of our contestants, and we’re ready to rock the state of Oregon.

The New Art of Book Promotion

ph2009092304612

Most of the people on this site are either bloggers, writers, or both.  I thought you all might find this Washington Post article interesting: Novice Authors Must Promote Themselves, Since Publishers Won’t.  Here’s a paragraph and a half from the article:

She cobbled together a trailer for her book on her home computer, using iMovie software, downloading a free tune off the Web for background music, and stuck it on her Web site. Her agent helped get her on one network television morning show. About 20 friends hosted book parties, which she hit on a self-funded three-week blitz, selling books out of the trunk of her car. A guy shot video of her reading an essay at one of these parties, and she posted it on YouTube when the paperback came out.

Singing by oneself

I saw the video above on AAM.  It’s a video of Sam Tsui, who is Yale student, and who made a Michael Jackson medley with his friend Kurt Schneider (the guy on the left doing the beat box thing).    It’s Sam Tsui times six, with Kurt doing the beats.  The first time I heard someone sing by himself on separate tracks was when Bobby McFerrin recorded Don’t Worry, Be Happy.  Sam and Kurt’s piece is pretty cool though because of the visuals.  How do they make a video like that?

Also check out their rendition of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing:

Show me the money

Saw this post by Phillip at offendmeyouoffendmyfamily.com.  I found it through TMM who found it through AAM, and now it’s here on BW (oh wow, I didn’t realize that my site has the same initials as my name.  Wow.)  In the post, Phillip mentions the protests against Ken Jeong–I’ll admit that I haven’t been following this one–and he mentions how he feels that these protest “victories” are not really victories at all, and that real change will come when Asian Americans start supporting Asian American arts with their dollars.  The blog post is interesting, as are the comments that follow.

Wong Fu on CNN

This is pretty cool. Wong Fu was on CNN.  (Thanks, Alpha.)  I wrote about these guys earlier.  I’m glad that they’re getting good media coverage, and it looks like they’re still doing well on college campuses.  I could think of worse jobs than touring the country for a bunch of screaming fans.  :)

The End of History and the Last Asian Man

Who's in the foreground, and what's the story?

A Canadian-Chinese Work of Orientalist White-Worshipping Glory

Orientalists–you people are everywhere.  Here I am, getting set in writing my piece for the Thymos Book Project, and you Orientalist Mofo’s have to lob another one in my direction.  I guess the upside is that you’re providing a good lead-in to my introduction of the Thymos Book Project–which will come as soon as I’m done with my first draft.  I’m sorry, but I’m not going to let your issues interfere with my work.

The Boston Phoenix, Media Racism, and Sam Yoon

Racist imagery, courtesy of the Boston Phoenix

Thanks to SEFTRE, who found this.  The Boston Phoenix ran an article on Friday about how Yoon and Menino are competing over the Boston Asian vote, and they accompanied the article with the photo on the right, a graphic of Menino in a Chinese takeout box labeled “Yoon for Mayor.”
