Lyoto Machida to Fight Jon Jones at UFC 140

I’m ho-hum about tonight’s UFC. Maynard vs. Edgar–I know some people like the main fight, but it bores me because it’s unlikely that either guy will finish the other. Stann vs. Sonnen is interesting, but I’m not sure I’d pay money to see it (I think Stann is going to win because of Sonnen’s ring rust.) Aldo vs. Florian? Seems like a win for Aldo. Nam Phan will beat Leonard Garcia. It’s a decent card but…meh.

UFC 129: Machida is BACK!

If there was ever a UFC fight that you didn’t want to miss, this was it.  It was hands down the best fight card I’d ever seen, and when they brought it on, the fights were even better than I thought they’d be.  There were 55,000 people in attendance.  EVERY fight was good.  The weakest fight was the main event with St. Pierre vs. Shields, and even that one was good.  The rest of the fights were amazing.

Should Lyoto retire?

This is an interesting video.  ESPN talks to Lyoto Machida’s father Shinzo and asks if Lyoto should retire.  Shinzo says that Lyoto should retire, that he has spoken with the rest of his family about his opinion but has yet to raise the issue with Lyoto.

I think part of the reason Yoshizo wants him to retire is that Lyoto is Yoshizo’s son.  It must be hard watching your son getting beaten up by a fighter like Shogun Rua.  The interesting part for me, however, was at the end, when Yoshizo talks about spirit, and how physical injuries heal quick while injuries to the spirit can take years to recover. This was exactly why I was calling for Machida to fight someone very easy in his next outing.  (This, of course, is pretty hard to find.  That 205 division is stacked with talent.)

The End of the Machida Era

Holy. I…don’t even know what to say about UFC 113.  I’m in shock. Complete shock. Almost as if someone knocked me out in the first round.

Where should I start? Let me start positive, then I’ll talk about Koscheck/Daley, then I’ll get sad but analytical, then I’ll try to end positive again. That sounds like a plan. Yeahh…

Congratulations to Shogun Rua. I thought Machida was going to beat him. I respect him as a person and a fighter. I think he’s an exemplary role model, and I’m happy for his win. If anyone wants to see why I respect Rua, check it out at around 4:55 here:

Lyoto Rua II

Edit 5/8, noon: Here’s what Rua is doing. He looks like he’s in the best shape of his life. That’s one badass kick.

Other than maybe Pacquiao-Mayweather, I can’t think of a better matchup this year.

Edit:5/8 morning: Rua needs to be worried.

Article here. Machida says his adjustments are small. All he really needs are small adjustments to make it happen. I’m pumped for this fight.

I caught this on Alpha Asian. I wasn’t going to post on this (since I had nothing to post), but I thought the interview above was interesting.

An Old Article about Lyoto

Lyoto "the Dragon" Machida

Lyoto "the Dragon" Machida

Someone e-mailed me an old NY Times article today: Contender Shores Up Karate’s Reputation Among U.F.C. Fans.  It’s about Lyoto Machida, written right before he knocked Rashad on his rear.  The article is about how Lyoto’s style is changing people’s perception of karate.  I agree with most of the article, but I think that karate’s reputation was suffering even before the UFC.  Lyoto really turned things around.

What’s ironic is that he’s not the only karate specialist.  Chuck Liddell and current welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, both mentioned in the article, are primarily karate stylists, as is Bas Rutten.  Pat Miletich got his striking from karate too.  Lyoto just happens to have the most karate-looking style.
