How to Finish Life With No Regrets

This article has been on my mind for the past two months: Advice on Life’s Graying Edge on Finishing With No Regrets. And it was only written two days ago! I was thinking about it even before it was written. Basically, it’s an article that talks about the Cornell University Legacy Project, which has interviews with elderly people on their advice for living well. Bookmark this site:

David Brooks: Well Planned vs. Summoned

David Brooks nails it again.  The guy is a national treasure.

In his latest column, he writes about two different ways in which people plan their lives.  The first he calls the Well-Planned Life, and he references this article by Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen (It’s a brilliant piece in itself, so please check it out.  Actually, I was thinking of blogging about this article by itself, but time constraints are preventing me.  I might do it in the future.  Maybe.  No promises.).  Christensen planned his own life by spending an hour a day thinking about “why God put [him] on this earth.”  Through dedicated effort, he found his purpose.  Brooks correlates this mindset with Christensen’s Christianity.  This to me was very interesting since Kobukson recently spoke about how Christianity affects culture.

Jaehwan's Come-to-Jesus Moment

cartoonfundamentalist

(cartoon from here)

If you talk to fundamentalist Christians, you’ll learn that each one has a story about God’s salvation.  Each person has a testimony, a come-to-Jesus moment, where they “realize” that Jesus died for their sins and that all Muslims, Buddhists, Shintoists, and atheists are condemned to eternity in Hell for not believing in Christ.  I never had such a moment with respect to religion (I still prefer the Flying Spaghetti Monster over the late J.C.), but this week I did have a revelation about life.  My revelation was this: I’ve officially entered middle age, and I’ve adopted the middle aged mindset about responsibility and legacy that comes along with it.

Daddies Who Become HouseDaddies

The latest blog post at RiceDaddies from Daddy in a Strange Land talks about Secret Identities and the promotional events in LA.  Check it out here.  As I mentioned a couple days ago, I have a podcast coming up with Jimmy Aquino, who is one of the writers for Secret Identities.  We recorded last night, and I expect to post that cast on Monday.

In his blog entry, Daddy in a Strange Land also linked a blog post that linked back to RD, a new blog called Double X (for the chromosomes).  This blog post is fascinating.  In the post, Hanna Rosin argues that we need fewer daddy posts, rather than more.  She then quotes an equally fascinating Atlantic article by Caitlin Flanagan:

Merry Christmas!

l to r: the inventor of the term "bigWOWO" and the webmaster

We’ve been snowed in for a week now.  However, I’m happy since this is the first snowy Portland Christmas that I remember.

Hope everyone is safe and warm!
