Laura and Lisa release book about North Korea ordeal

We’ve been following the Laura Ling/Euna Lee story here since day one.  We were here when they were first caught, when they were sentenced (hilarious conversation under this blog post!), and when they were freed (search “Euna” to see all eight of our blog posts).  And as many of us predicted early in the game, one of them has co-authored a book about their ordeal: Somewhere Inside: One Sister’s Captivity in North Korea and the Other’s Fight to Bring Her Home.

Everyone is a Winner

Laura Ling and Lisa Ling

Laura Ling and Lisa Ling

Pic from here.

Now that Laura and Lisa are home, it looks like everyone coming out of this is a winner.  Bubba won because he’s back in the spotlight where he loves to be.  Gore won because it’s coming out that he was working behind the scenes for their release.  Lisa gets her sister back.  Obama avoids an international dispute that could have easily spiraled out of control.  Because Willie visited as a “private citizen” with no messages from the current president, we also know that Obama didn’t have to negotiate or concede anything.  The North Koreans wanted Willie just for the photo-op.

Laura and Euna to be released

Laura Ling and Euna Lee

Laura Ling and Euna Lee

Thanks to Dodie who reported this. Laura Ling and Euna, according to KCNA, are going to be released. I said that it would take Clinton a week, but it’s already done. Amazing.  Congratulations to everyone, and good work.

Bill Clinton negotiating for Laura and Euna

artclintonafpIt has been confirmed: Bill Clinton has arrived in North Korea, ostensibly to negotiate the release of Laura Ling and Euna Lee.

I think this is great news.  Bill Clinton is not officially part of the Obama cabinet (though he’s UN Special Envoy to Haiti), which should keep our non-official relationship with NK’s terrorist government, and Clinton still has the cachet as a former President of the United States, which should please the North Koreans.  Plus, he’s a great negotiator and master politician.  As David Brooks said of Clinton, “he was a member of every clique at once.”  There couldn’t be a better guy to send for this job.  Though I’ve seen Willie burn bridges, I sincerely believe right now that when he leaves NK, the Kims will be happy, the Obamas will be happy, and Laura and Lisa will be free.  I think this will be over within the next couple of weeks, if not the next few days.

A Disadvantage of Small, Independent Media

Protesters in Seoul, South Korea

Protesters in Seoul, South Korea

Good article here about Euna Lee and Laura Ling and how Current TV’s status as a small upstart affects their chances for freedom.  According to the article, it’s harder for a smaller channel like Current to exert leverage over foreign governments.  Roxanna Saberi had the same problems in Iran.  The article says:

One of the risks of this kind of improvised, headlong journalism is that reporters lack the backing of large established news organizations that might have the experience and leverage to deal with foreign governments. While Ms. Ling and Ms. Lee, full-time employees of Current, have the backing of Al Gore, who is a founder of the network, they lack the support system that their colleagues at CNN and the British Broadcasting Corporation enjoy.

Euna Lee and Laura Ling Sentenced to Twelve Years

According to CNN, Euna Lee and Laura Ling were sentenced by North Korea’s high court to 12 years hard labor, which was the expected maximum sentence.  If carried out, this guarantees that Euna Lee’s daughter will grow up without a mother.   I have no idea what kind of kangaroo court they put these poor women through, but that’s an awfully fast decision given the fact that the trial only started on Thursday.  As mentioned in the video above, many people don’t survive the labor camps, but the report also says that in the past, convicted American journalists and soldiers have not actually gone to the labor camps and have instead been freed through negotiations.  Hopefully this will happen again.
