Jones-Machida Inspires My Hunger for Vocabulary

Schadenfreude. It means pleasure at someone else’s misfortune. It’s German. English has no word for it, although English speakers most certainly feel it.

I’m at a loss after Jon Jones choked Lyoto Machida unconscious. And it has troubled me, because I don’t have words to express what I’m feeling. Somewhere in some language there must be vocabulary to express the sentiments:

1. Jon Jones: There must be a word to indicate my feelings towards him. “I dislike his arrogant personality but I like his arrogant martial arts style so I might as well deal with it,” therefore I feel **** about him.

Chinese instruction growing in public schools

32240914

Caught this article in the Times.  It looks like while most language instruction is fading under the economic stress of this recession, Chinese instruction in the public schools is on the rise, and it has gone beyond the coastal states of the U.S. and into central states like Colorado, Ohio, and Georgia.  The Chinese government is helping by subsidizing the salaries of some of these teachers.  It’s about time the Chinese government offered us a bailout!

Chinese Language DVDs: Mei Mei Hu

video01

Edit: Okay, I just saw some of the later videos, so I have to correct what I wrote.  Some of the later DVDs in the series are quite high tech and shot from China.  They look like they had professional choreographers and makeup artists, and the sound quality is professional.  So the following only applies to the other ones we saw.  My bad, Mei Mei.
