“But he hit me back first!”

I thought this was a joke when I first saw it: African Americans in Dallas Target Korean Business. According to the article,

The customer, complaining that the price of gas at the station was much higher than at other stations, demanded he be able to buy gas by smaller amounts than what the owner set as the minimum sales unit. The owner refused and told him to go to another station, to which the customer responded by telling the owner to go back to his country. The owner responded by telling the customer to go back to Africa.

Finally, a Community Victory!

Check out Clara Shih‘s speech above. This post was originally going to be about Judy Joo, one of the judges on the Next Iron Chef, who is attractive, accomplished, Asian female, and like the vast majority of AF in the public eye, married to a guy who lacks melanin. I had a long post written from last week about how our individuals get victories, and how I’m happy for their victories, but how we never get community victories, since they all marry White. I was going to say that I was happy for them, but there was never anything for the Asian man because da’ Chinaman need not apply when it comes to love with China-women.

Korean Grocers on the Decline

Korean grocers dominate the fresh food markets, owning nearly 70% of the market share in New York, but they are on the decline: A New York Staple for Decades, Korean Grocers are Dwindling.  I guess Al Sharpton got his wish–they boycotted, and now they’re finally shutting down.  Sharpton can now shop at Whole Foods.  (joke y’all.)

Seriously speaking though, I think it’s a natural progression.  Much as Chinese people left the laundry business, Koreans were bound to leave the grocery business.  It’s not a fun job if you’ve got other options.

Father School

Thanks to Hau, for posting this article: the Korean Dads’ 12-Step Program.  Thanks to Linda and King for commenting on it.  Thanks to KM for an article by Koream on the same topic a couple years back: Schooling Fathers.  Both articles discuss Father School, a cultural import from South Korea that teaches Korean men to be better fathers.  Based on Biblical evangelism and self-help principles, Father School has been exploding in recent years, as more Korean men are trying to learn to become better fathers who are more emotionally connected to their wives and children.

Korean American Love

Check out the two videos above. It looks like it’s part of a larger series on Korean Americans in general. There are lots of other videos if you go to the YouTube channel of the guy/gal who posted it, but I only decided to post the videos on everyone’s favorite topic. Curiously, there don’t seem to be many YouTube views. I don’t know how representative of the Korean-Am experience these are–at least two of the participants are in the entertainment field, which is a glamour job. But it was interesting nevertheless on that level.

Chinese vs. Koreans, Mainstream vs. Minority

The best thing about this blog are the comments.  Yes, we have our share of trolls and morons here, but we also have some truly intelligent people who make wise observations, and every so often, I like to spotlight these observations.  So here’s one from Just Me:

Last thing, I hate to say this and I don’t want to offend even though this is a huge generalization, but I seem to see this a lot in the Chinese, that they are taught by their parents conflicting messages 1. many typically have an idea of themselves as “mainstream people” this is very different than Koreans who see themselve as minorities ( wherever they may be and thus a need to defend their identities ).

Western Schools in South Korea

Saw this article in the Times today.  In South Korea, the government is financing a 940 acre city on Jeju Island where everyone–doctors, administrators, students, store clerks–will speak English.  The purpose is education; 12 Western schools have plans to open within the city, and the hope is that Korean kids can go to school and speak perfect English when done.  It’s better than sending kids abroad because it’s cheaper, it enables families to stay closer together, and kids will be more likely to retain their Korean and ability to work within a Korean system.  You can see the website for Jeju itself here

IR and Romance in the Hermit Kingdom

A female reader sent this one in: Korean Females Eye Foreign Husbands. (I mention that the reader is female just to let y’all know it’s not one of the usual IR gang.)

I think the writer is reporting something that we’ve known for a while. Jump over the Pacific, and certain stereotypes rein supreme across the board. It’s like that in Japan, China, Korea, and just about anywhere you see people with black hair (well, not in Zimbabwe under Mugabe, but you get what I’m saying…). Check it:
