Aomori, Japan

I landed in Aomori, Japan in 1997 when I was 21 years old.  I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, but a large English instruction school in Japan had recruited at my college campus, and I thought Japan might be interesting, especially since I had an interest in judo.  I decided to interview and suddenly found myself with a job teaching conversational English.  I waited until the company was ready to take me, and then I headed out first to Tokyo and then to Aomori.

Massive Earthquake Hits Japan

A massive earthquake hit Japan off the coast of Sendai last night.  Tsunamis covered cars and pulled them into water in Sendai, while in Tokyo large buildings swayed back and forth.  It looks like it’s the largest earthquake ever in the history of Japan.  So far at least 200-300 bodies have been found in Sendai.  I will post ways in which we can help them once the resources are out.  Let’s wish for the safety of our friends and family in Japan.

Japanese Living in Capsule Hotels

popup

According to the NY Times, many Japanese are now staying at capsule hotels because of the bad economy.  Capsule hotels, as you can see from the picture above, are “hotels” that rent out small boxes where people can sleep.  There are so many people who have moved out from real homes that the capsule hotels are now allowing people to pay monthly and to register the hotels as their official addresses.  In the past, these hotels were mostly patronized by salarymen who had missed the last train.

Go home and procreate

There’s an interesting video on CNN about Canon Japan and its new program to get workers to go home early and “procreate.” See the article here. What a great company! I’m proud to own a Canon digital camera.

There were a number of questions/thoughts that popped into my head after watching/reading this.

1. How does the company benefit from sending its workers home early? Cutting overtime seems rather useless compared with the more common method of cutting workforce. Plus, if these people do have babies who scream through the night, they’re going to be tired and walking around like zombies, and they’ll be more or less useless to the company. (I’m speaking a bit from experience.)
