PostSecret for Asian Americans

shush_by_mztrippie

(pic from here)

Caught news of a new site called PostMimi at Slant Eye for the Round Eye. It’s a PostSecret-style blog, where the author Karen encourages Asian Americans to e-mail or mail their secrets to her.

I like the idea.  But many Asian Americans already routinely post their secrets under anonymous handles on sites like the 44s and 8 Asians.  I remember admin-ing the 44s and meeting some guy who admitted that he had been convicted of attempted rape, and that he didn’t care or have remorse.  It was baffling (and sickening).  So I wonder whether anyone will actually post anything original.

Discussion from Obsessed

300_535612I saw the trailer for this movie on TV a couple of weeks ago, and so I blogged a bit about the race dynamics behind the production, the casting, and the movie itself.  Though the reviews for this movie were harsh, the movie ended up topping this weekend’s box office numbers.  I don’t know about the rest of you, but I want to see this movie.  Badly.

Obsessed: Fatal Attraction Among Black People

Obsessed

Idris Elba and Beyonce in Obsessed

I saw a commercial for Obsessed last week.  It’ll be out at the end of the month.  It’s a Fatal Attraction story with black people–but not really: the happily married couple is black, while the psycho woman is white.  Beyonce Knowles plays the wife, Idris Elba (who has a delightful British accent in the featurette bel0w) plays the husband, and Ali Larter from Heroes plays the psychotic woman who stalks the husband.

See the featurette here:

So where do I begin…

IR on the Decline

picture-2Saw this on the 44s.  Apparently IR is on the decline:

Katie Xiao emigrated from China when she was 4 and always thought of herself as Americanized — until she started dating.

Subtle cultural clashes with Caucasian or Latino boyfriends led to unhappy breakups. It made her realize she’s more Chinese than she thought. Now she wants to meet a man of Asian descent.

Rupert Apologizes

The Most Powerful Media Man in the World

The Most Powerful Media Man in the World

(Picture from Ask Men.)

Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corp owns the New York Post, apologized today for the chimp cartoon.  It’s a warm, sincere apology, and it’s the right thing to do.  It’s good to hear that the apology came from the very top.  The most powerful media man in the world has apologized for an offending cartoon in one of his many papers.

“It was not meant to be racist, but unfortunately, it was interpreted by many as such. We all hold the readers of the New York Post in high regard, and I promise you that we will seek to be more attuned to the sensitivities of our community.”

The First Black First Family

obamafamily

CNN has a great piece on the Obamas role in breaking stereotypes of what a black family is supposed to be.  Check it out here

This is hilarious:

Jamaal Young was watching Barack Obama and his family greet an ecstatic crowd in Chicago, Illinois, on Election Night when he realized that something seemed wrong.

Obama didn’t shout at his wife, Michelle, to shut up. The first lady didn’t roll her eyes and tell Obama to act like a man. No laugh track kicked in, no one danced, and no police sirens wailed in the background.

Gender Divide Podcast

Picture from KATU.  We got about six inches of snow today.  It’s very cold.

We did our big gender divide podcast last night.  Participants were the Antisocial Ladder, the Minority Militant, the Alpha-Asian, Winnovative, Larry, Jason, urB4N, and me.  You can download it here or listen to it below (though we tried to create two different podcasts, it came out as ONE big audio file, a whopping hour and 34 minutes, 30-something megabytes big):

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The Post-PUA Era of the Asian American Blogosphere

BKS Iyengar

BKS Iyengar

But what has ego done to procreation, to the harmonious union of complementary opposites? It has twisted it into an act of egoic self-affirmation. Lust is self-validation through consumption. Control through the exercise of power.

Out of the Comfort Zone

Thanks to the Alpha-Asian for linking the video above and below.

I agree with Alpha’s sentiments about PUA “white worship,” or the need for Asian men to prove themselves by dating women of the majority race. Though I support both interracial and intra-racial relationships, it probably would have been nice for there to be less of a focus on dating white and more of a focus on just dating. That being said, I also agree with Alpha’s piece when it comes to “limiting beliefs.” I think part of the issue is that shy men limit themselves by not stepping outside of their comfort zone.

First Asian Boy

Everyone is posting this up, so I’m going to be a follower and will do the same. I don’t know about the political ramifications of such a video…but it’s absolutely hilarious. Enjoy!
