Chinese People Co-Opting “Made in Italy”

Here’s an unintentionally funny story: Chinese Remake the “Made in Italy” Fashion Label.

People tend to associate Italian manufactured goods with high quality and high price.  Armani, Ferrari, Versace, Gucci, and Fendi.  When you buy Italian goods, you usually pay through the nose to acquire them because they tend to be high quality.  Italian clothing is known for its high class handiwork.

But what happens when:

a) The economy is bad

b) People move in and out of countries

c) Chinese people love to produce stuff cheaply

Building Subcultures and Accepting Emotions

Quest Crew

I’m at the car dealership right now, getting one of the seatbelts on my car fixed. I accidentally broke it while installing a car seat, and now it’s gonna cost me. But man, this waiting room is high tech. Free wireless, free donuts, free coffee, lots of big screen TVs with CNBC. Plus a kids area.

Alexander Wang in the NY Times

I’ll admit that I don’t know anything about fashion. A high school friend once told me I had to be more fashionable. I tried, but it was so hard that I just gave up.  I realized that my fashion sense was so bad that I should be content just to match.

Nevertheless, I realize that fashion is important–not just for people who want to look good, but for society in general. Fashion is just another way of expressing oneself through visual means.   When people look good, they feel good, and they inspire others.  Which is why it’s good to see Asian Americans like Alexander Wang making their mark.

Young Designers

10-philliplim-large

Thanks to Lingyai for bringing this article to my attention.  It doesn’t say anything about Asian designers, but that’s basically what it is.

I’ve never been into fashion or design, but I have noticed a very strong showing in that industry by Asian Americans.  Fashion, design, architecture–it seems like it’s an area where many people from our culture are distinguishing themselves.  I know quite a few designers myself. Wish I had an eye for that visual kind of thing. (Y’all would definitely see a more attractive WOWO site…)
