Tyra on Beauty, Success, and Spreading the Message

Some of the women might enjoy this video (see above too).  Tyra Banks has accomplished so much in terms of managing the female dichotomy of looks and success on the world stage. She’s done amazing work in getting people to talk about beauty and women’s self-images.  In the video above, she talks about beauty, success, and reaching out to the people.

“It was really important to me as a model of color for corporations to invest in me and to hire me to endorse their product so then I got contracts with Pepsi and Nike and Cover Girl and Swatch….to me dealing with corporate America was where true success was.”

Beauty and the Ethnic Woman

The beautiful and natural Yunjin Kim

Thanks, King, for sending in these articles: Erasing Ethnicity.

(I google searched for a picture of a blonde haired, blue eyed Asian woman to put on the front-page of this article.  The results were all hideous, so I didn’t bother posting.  So instead y’all get to see a picture of the beautiful and natural Asian American Yunjin Kim who recently decided not to go with the typical marriage trend.  Represent, Yunjin!  Min Jin, you broke my heart; Yunjin, you put it back together!)

Miss Asian Oregon

mao

Okay, time for an exciting announcement. I am the co-owner of the Miss Asian Oregon Pageant, and we will be having our inaugural event on October 10th, 2009 down in Salem. My partner Michelle is a former contestant/finalist and law firm owner, and we are totally psyched about doing this. Our emcee/organizer Liani is a prominent public official and lawyer activist. We now have all of our contestants, and we’re ready to rock the state of Oregon.

Miss Tibet

Choekyapy, a monk, and Sonam Choedon, Miss Tibet 2008

Even a beauty contest in Tibet is a political issue.

Some of you may disagree with me on this one, but I think beauty contests are important, especially for minorities.  People always talk about image.  Well, this promotes image, doesn’t it?

Plus, this isn’t just a beauty contest; it’s a knowledge contest too:

The heavily made-up contestants wear elaborate gold jewelry and floor-length chubas, traditional Tibetan robes. The pageants include yoga competitions and questions about Buddhist philosophy and Tibetan history. The toughest part is the swimsuit round — in addition to enduring the gawking men, the contestants must weather the mountain chill.
