B.J. Penn To Retire?

I knew Nick Diaz was going to win this fight. BJ actually did much better than I thought he would, but Diaz’s cardio was just too strong. BJ easily won the first round while outstriking and taking Diaz down, but he gassed in the second round while Diaz was throwing and landing punches from everywhere. BJ was clearly tired. The third round was closer, but again, Diaz outlanded him. Both guys had their faces all bloody by the end, but Diaz wasn’t even breathing hard. At the end, BJ told Joe Rogan that he wasn’t coming back, that he had a daughter and another on the way, and that he didn’t want to go home “looking like this” anymore. I don’t know if he was reacting emotionally to the outcome of the fight, but if he does decide to retire, I hope he has a long career as a coach. I’d hate for him to leave MMA.

B.J. Penn disappoints

I didn’t call this fight, and I’m glad I didn’t.  Not because I would’ve gotten the results wrong–I probably would have–but because Penn brought nothing new to the fight and lost again because of his lack of newness.  Penn vs. Edgar II was basically the exact same fight as Penn vs. Edgar I.  Edgar threw weak blows that did nothing to hurt Penn but racked up points on the judge’s scorecards.  He took Penn down a few times and was unable to hold him down but again used his takedowns to rack up points.

BJ Penn loses lightweight title

(pic from here)

Reading the blogosphere about the UFC this past weekend, it looks like I was somewhat right and somewhat wrong in my predictions.  I correctly predicted Matt Hughes would win, though I wish it had been otherwise.  From what I’m reading (I didn’t see and I won’t bother seeing the fight), Silva could have beaten Maia in the first round, but instead spent time clowning around and disgracing the sport.  So I’ll consider my Silva prediction somewhat correct.  The shocker, however, was the fight between Penn and Edgar, which Edgar won by unanimous decision.  I was certain Penn was going to completely dominate.  Oi.  We now have one less Asian American MMA champion!
