Chinese guy pays $2.11 million for lunch with Warren Buffett

Zhao Danyang

Zhao Danyang

Zhao Danyang, a hedge fund manager in Hong Kong, paid $2.11 million for a lunch with Warren Buffett.  For that big price tag, he got to bring seven of his close friends and family.  It’s all for a good cause–proceeds go to the Glide Foundation, which benefits homeless and poor people in San Francisco.  But $2.11 million?  I’m glad someone is doing well in this economy.  Evidently, Zhao really is: his fund has had a 600% return over six years, which is much better than what my portfolio has done in the same period.  Hell, that’s better than what Buffett’s portfolio has done.

Fish and more fish

Does everyone out there eat fish?

I’m a big Asian fish fan, that is, I usually prefer it Asian style–either Chinese style or Japanese sushi style.  It’s healthy, it’s clean, and it requires very little in terms of marinating, rubbing, etc.  There’s a clean feeling that comes from eating fish that doesn’t exist with other “meats.”  It’s good eating too–it won’t clog your arteries with cholesterol, and there are health benefits from the fact that most fish contain Omega 3. Plus, fish don’t release large amounts of methane into the atmosphere like cows.  Fish contain protein, which is essential to a healthy lifestyle.

Zee Avi

Saw this video of Zee Avi on Youtube.  Her music is the Spotlight Tuesday music selection for YouTube.  She’s got a powerful voice with some pretty cool, happy tunes. It’s one of the coolest collections I’ve heard in a long time. Zee Avi is from Malaysia, and her debut CD is coming out today.  Check it out!

"The Most Powerful International Public Health Official in History"

09chan_190

The NY Times had a good profile of Dr. Margaret Chan, Director General of the World Health Organization, who has been in the news recently because of her spearheading her organization’s effort to prevent the spread of swine flu.  According to the Times, she is perhaps “the most powerful international public health official in history.”  In this day and age of global travel and business, it’s important for people to work together to prevent diseases from spreading.  I’ve read nothing but positive things about Dr. Chan in the media, and it seems that swine flu has been relatively under control in recent days.

Connections and helpful activities through the web

Chen Xiao

Chen Xiao

CNN had this inspiring story off its front page.

Chen Xiao, living in Beijing, had a terrible 2008.  So she put her life online, asking strangers to hire her for $3 an hour.  She does little tasks around Beijing, meeting people and sharing in their experiences.  She’s found that she’s making a good living and meeting lots of interesting people.

What she stumbled upon was not only a new life but a new way to make a living. She charges about $3 an hour, and she’s been asked to do almost everything from delivering pet food to caring for stray cats to taking a hot lunch to a homeless man.
