Asian Men, Black Men, and the Competition for White Women

About ten years ago, I read a book called “Envy of the World” by Ellis Cose, where he talks about what it’s like to be a black man. He wrote about black men’s appeal to White women and how some black women were resentful of BM/WF, even if, in his explanation, 9 out 10 black men who married did so with black women. Fast forward ten years, and Moroboshi wrote this statement in the last HBD thread:

No House, No Date!

Look what’s on the NY Times front page: For Many Chinese Men, No Deed Means No Dates.  (Awesome picture, too.)  Yikes, even guys in the motherland have got it tough.  The article says:

Where the Black Man is King/FlashForward's IR pairing

Neutral Observer asked me to comment on Gabrielle Union and John Cho’s onscreen romance on FlashForward.  He writes:

Asian male bloggers have long compared their dating plight to that of black women, and have long said that maybe they need to expand their dating pool outside the asian female sphere.
Seems, at least on TV, we’re getting a dramatization of this “solution.”
Combine that with how this is a pushing back against the media’s systematic “de-sexualization” of the asian man’s image, and I’m doubly curious to get your thoughts on this.
