Ed Wang, First Chinese American in the NFL

Dizzle first broke the story about Ed Wang last year.

Thanks to Alpha for the vid above.

Ed Wang is a 6’5, 315 lb. lineman.  He was just drafted out of Virginia Tech by the Bills, and he just became the very first person of 100% Chinese descent in the NFL.  Both of his parents are former Olympians from China, and if you look the footage of them standing next to Ed in the video above, they’re not small people.  His younger brother is pretty big too.

The Definitive History of Asian Men Dating Outside their Race

So what do you all think of the new look?  As some of you know, something batty happened with my WordPress, and the old theme was one of the casualties from the fall.  The new theme, which I absolutely LOVE (and will try to tweak if you e-mail suggestions), was designed by Eyoung.  Thanks, Eyoung for your awesome theme.

Playing the Dozens and Working on Your Mack

I remember working my first retail job in New York.  I was working selling computers for a crappy, fly-by-night storefront, and it was my first time working in a truly multiethnic environment.  We were talking about college, and one of my black male coworkers remarked about my alma mater: “They gave you a degree?  Man, they must be giving out degrees to just about everyone these days!” Everyone burst out in laughter.

I was shocked.  I didn’t know what to say.  I was out of words before the war of words even began.

Children of Invention

bigWOWO Rating: Asian American Bronze

Let me first begin by saying that I’m not a frequent consumer of artsy-style indie films.  So take my words below with a grain of salt.

I received several e-mails announcing Children of Invention, but I usually ignore movie announcements since I live in po’ dunk Oregon and usually can’t see them anyway.  In this case, however, TMM let the world know that you could “rent” this movie on YouTube.  That’s right, for the low price of $3.99 and a YouTube account, you can see this movie over the web.  A rental gets you 48 hours of unlimited viewing.  It’s a really great way to get your movie out while still getting paid.  I’m glad that Tze Chun decided to go this route.

Self Defense?

Thanks Mojo–another violent incident coming straight out of Philly. This incident is a bit gray in terms of what happened and what the consequences should be.

If you look at the video above, there was a shooting on a busy street. Some facts are not in dispute: Gerald Ung, a third year law student, fired six gunshots at Edward DiDonato, a former captain of the Villanova University lacrosse team, hitting him in the hand, abdomen, shoulders, and chest. Immediately after the shooting, Ung used his cell phone to call the police and waited until they arrived. He’s being charged with attempted homicide and aggravated assault. The gun was licensed. DiDonato is a nephew of a prominent Philly politician.

Health Risks for Minorities Trying to Look White

Sammy Sosa, before and now

Sammy Sosa, before and now

You know those skin whitening creams that some minorities use to whiten their skin?  Apparently there are health problems associated with them.  One woman used it, and it made her skin so thin that it bruised easily.  She also got acne.  Where was she getting this skin cream?

“I never read the labels,” Mrs. Ross said. Instead, she took her cues from friends, many of them, like her, from the West Indies. “Once somebody told me Fair & White was the one they were using, I’d go to the Korean store and ask for it,” she said.

The Asian Inferiority Complex

I remember calling an Asian American friend when I first landed in Japan right after college.

“How do the guys here get anything done?” I asked him, jokingly.  “The women here are eye-blindly beautiful.  I’d have trouble keeping an eye on my work.”

At the time, Amuro Namie was really big in Japan.  I was working for a White British woman at the school where I taught, and the British woman told me, “Have you heard of Amuro Namie?  She is absolutely gorgeous.  Among the most beautiful women in the entire world.”

Girly Girls, Princesses, and Asian American Women

I read Emily Co’s piece on AbsolutelyFobulous about the Princess and the Frog, and the implications of ethnic princesses.  In her piece, she writes:

I know we have Mulan and everything, but somehow she doesn’t seem to fit that Disney princess mold. I’m pretty girly, so I’d love to see an Asian princess who traipses around in a poofy dress, preferably wearing a tiara. I just simply didn’t identify with Mulan and I wonder if little Asian girls feel the same way. I can’t really picture them clamoring to wear Mulan’s armor for Halloween when they can don Belle’s yellow froufrou ballgown.

Raise your voice (and use your money) against the Philadelphia School District

Thanks to Minority Militant, Alpha-Asian, AngryAsianMan, Field, and, well, just about everyone else, for bringing some attention to the racial violence taking place at South Philadelphia High School. We’re not seeing it very much in the mainstream media, so I think it’s good that bloggers are “covering” it. (I put “covering” in parentheses since we’re just linking to a mainstream account.)
