Health Risks for Minorities Trying to Look White

Sammy Sosa, before and now

Sammy Sosa, before and now

You know those skin whitening creams that some minorities use to whiten their skin?  Apparently there are health problems associated with them.  One woman used it, and it made her skin so thin that it bruised easily.  She also got acne.  Where was she getting this skin cream?

“I never read the labels,” Mrs. Ross said. Instead, she took her cues from friends, many of them, like her, from the West Indies. “Once somebody told me Fair & White was the one they were using, I’d go to the Korean store and ask for it,” she said.

Racist HP Webcam

The video above is pretty funny and creative: HP Webcams can’t see black people.  The cameras are supposed to recognize faces and follow them around, but apparently they don’t work if a person’s complexion is too dark.  Consumer Reports tested out the claim and found that it was true, but it found that it could work with a black person if more lighting sources were added.

(Normally I’d say something about the STUPID comments under the YouTube video, but I’m going to maintain the holiday cheer and just ignore ‘em.  Let’s be thankful those morons aren’t here.)

"Gaslighting"

gaslight_1944_filmAight, I’ve gone three posts without a comment (on my new posts–people are still commenting on the old posts) with no drop in traffic.  What this means is that either I’m being too positive (John Liu wins), or my stuff is becoming too esoteric, or I’m deviating from race-related issues.  Since I’m about to move even further into crazy-land with our Justice course, let me just quickly put up one partially race related post.  In fact, I’ll even do one on IR!

Boys and Presidents

“Beyond a reasonable doubt” is the criteria that courts in America use to convict felons.  This means that in order to get a conviction, one don’t need a smoking gun; all one needs is evidence that brings the case to a point where a person would be unable to reasonably doubt that the perp did it.

Maureen Dowd had a great Op-Ed in the Times today.  In her piece, she indicates that she believes that racism played a part in Joseph Wilson’s rude, disrespectful, and uncouth outburst when he shouted “You lie!” at President Obama.  She makes a really good case.  Check it out:

"Black Folks Need Legacy"

I’m not sure why there is so much talk out there about African Americans and money. Maybe it’s because our economy is in the dumps right now. Maybe it’s because we ought to be focused on how we can pull ourselves out of the dumps. Anyway, here’s another article, this time about a couple of older African American brothers (literal not figurative) who run a $1 billion corporation with holdings in real estate, retail, and hotels.  The link says, “black.donald.trumps.”  I shudder in pity.

Here is a good quote:

Starting a business when young

Ephren Taylor, in the CNN video above, talks about starting a business. He started his first business at 12, became a millionaire at 17, and is now the youngest African American CEO of a publicly traded company. He’s written a book called, “Creating Success from the Inside Out.”

I like what he says about starting a business.  He says that college is the best time to do it, when you have no kids, no mortgage, tons of friends around you, and lots of expert professors.  He says that when you’re young, everyone wants to help you.  Man, he should’ve told me this fifteen years ago (when I was eighteen, and he was 11…oh wait, that was before he started his first business!)!

How to Control the Slaves from Willie Lynch

sam-doyle-slave-mastersummary

(pic from here)

Thanks, Lxy, for posting this vintage link on TMM’s board.  Beware of Willie Lynch.

“In my bag here, I have a fool proof method for controlling Black Slaves. I guarantee everyone of you that if installed correctly, it will control the slaves for at least 300 years. My method is simple and members of your family and any Overseer can use it.

I have outlined a number of difference(s) among the slaves; and I take these differences and make them bigger. I use fear, distrust, and envy for control purposes…”

Edit 7/22/09: New pic of actual arrest from CNN:

Gates in cuffs

Gates in cuffs

Word got out a few hours ago that Henry Louis Gates was arrested last Thursday for disorderly conduct.  Apparently someone suspected Gates of breaking and entering into what turned out to be his own home, and they called the cops.  Gates was already inside the house when Officer James Crowley got there, and when Crowley asked him to step outside, Gates questioned the cop.  There were a few verbal exchanges, the Crowley ended up arresting Gates for disorderly conduct.

Single Black Women Adopting

Wendy Duren with her beautiful daughter Madison

Wendy Duren with her beautiful daughter Madison

I saw this beautiful, though somewhat sad, article on CNN today.  Black women are choosing to adopt without waiting for a man to come around.  These black women are successful, strong, and accomplished, but they have not found men who will marry them or treat them with respect.  Many have decided to go ahead and move forward with motherhood.  It’s beautiful because these women are empowered and not allowing society to hold them back, but it’s sad because these men are turning down something good.

Explorations between here and the motherland

sugabellyheadSugabelly recently came to my blog and left a comment on my Africa post.  I thank her for that.  Check out her absolutely fantastic blog.  It’s full of interesting observations about Nigeria, Nigerian culture, and the world in which we live.

I especially enjoyed her podcast on Africans vs. African Americans.  I’ve read about some of the cultural differences between the two groups before.  It’s an interesting debate, especially with her observations about how each group stereotypes the other.  With differences in the long legacy of African American slavery and the cultural background of recent African immigrants, it’s no wonder that there are debates.  Check out her comment thread.
