California Apologizes to Chinese Americans

china_california_0721

(Thanks to D in HK for sending this!)

On July 17th, 2009, the California legislature approved a bill that apologized for racist laws against Chinese Americans during the mid nineteenth century.  According to the article:

The laws, some of which were not repealed until the 1940s, barred Chinese from owning land or property, marrying whites, working in the public sector and testifying against whites in court. The new bill also recognizes the contributions Chinese immigrants have made to the state, particularly their work on the Transcontinental Railroad.

Activist Summer Months are Starting

I wanted to give you all the heads up that the summer of activist partying is about to start for me.  For those who followed my stuff on the 44s, you may be remember that a few months before this time last year, I was busy getting on my knees and begging for funds to support the Frank Chin Event, which turned out to be one of the greatest Asian American events in Portland’s history.  My knees were sore from begging so much.  The blog posts didn’t exactly stop, but they slowed down to a crawl.

Postcards for Laura and Euna

Thanks to Charlie who brought this to our attention: if you want to show your support for Laura and Euna, you can send them postcards in care of their families.  From the Laura and Euna website:

Let Laura and Euna know they are not forgotten. Because of the difficulty in sending mail to North Korea, please send postcards only. Unfortunately, we cannot accept letters or packages on their behalf. Postcards can be sent to them care of their families, who will then forward them through the Swedish ambassador to North Korea.

Send your notes of encouragement to:

The End of Superstardom

28segal_1901There’s an article in the Times today about Michael Jackson, and how no one will ever be as big as Michael again.  The article presents an interesting historical look at some other big names in the show biz.  According to the author, we have too many choices for any single star to capture an entire public’s imagination as people did back in the day.

Many pundits have presented this same view.  I agree with them.  We only have one President of the United States, so Obama was able to capture our attention, but for artists and others, there are just too many choices and options competing for our attention.  David Brooks wrote a column about this a while back, where he talked about about how we all listen to different music these days.

Ray Bradbury in action

Ray Bradbury

Ray Bradbury

88 years old and still fighting.  That’s how I hope to be.

Ray Bradbury is fighting, speaking, and fundraising for public libraries in California.  The famous sci-fi writer is helping to save the libraries, which are suffering due to declining property tax revenues in the Ventura area.  I remember reading Bradbury’s account of writing Fahrenheit 451, where he rented space at a typewriter to start and complete his novel.  That’s some serious history.  I love this guy’s take on libraries:

Slanteyefortheroundeye has a good interview with the Secret Identities boys here.  (He makes mention of our man Jimmy Aquino at the end).  In the interview, SEFTRE asks Jeff Yang about inclusion of different minority groups and sexual orientations, and Jeff mentions a Racialicious post that attacked him on questions of diversity.  If you read the comments in the Racialicious post, you can see Jeff try to defend himself only to have lots of angry people showing their fangs.

The Good, the Exciting, and the Dull

With a crying infant and a growing toddler, I’ve been suffering from severe sleep deprivation, which means that I’m finding it hard to think on my own.  Creativity?  Gone.  Writing?  On hiatus.  Dreaming?  How do you dream when you never sleep?  So these days it makes me happy when someone does my thinking for me.
