Size Matters
For those who don’t know, I’m trying hard to get into shape. I’ve got an athletic competition coming up later this summer, so I’ve been running more than I’ve ever run before. I can now do 5 miles in one outing–prior to this summer, my maximum had been two. My goal is to be able to run 5 miles 3 times within a day. In achieving this goal, I’m also trying to get my weight down from 170 to 150. I have a bad knee, so this most likely will be a one shot deal, and after this summer, I’ll have to find other ways to keep in shape.
Peace and Clarity
There’s a beautiful essay/blog entry by Pico Iyer, the famous travel writer, in the Times today. In the essay, he talks about how he left the busy rat race to take a quieter life near Kyoto where he has no bicycle, television, or media. He acknowledges that his quiet lifestyle isn’t for everyone, but it helps him. Here’s an excerpt:
The millionaires I know seem desperate to become multimillionaires, and spend more time with their lawyers and their bankers than with their friends (whose motivations they are no longer sure of). And I remember how, in the corporate world, I always knew there was some higher position I could attain, which meant that, like Zeno’s arrow, I was guaranteed never to arrive and always to remain dissatisfied.
Fast Food in China
Fast food is all the rage in China. A new Kentucky Fried Chicken opens every day. It’s a good day to be a corporate giant in China, a bad day to be a chicken. (Haha…they’re probably imported, so maybe it’s a bad day to be a chicken in the U.S.)
What I thought was most unexpected about this video was the fact that people in China think fast food is healthy. Healthier than Chinese food? KFC and Mickey D’s must be doing some serious hard marketing back in the motherland.
Medium's Genius Screenwriting and Acting
If you didn’t catch the last Medium, you need to. Check it out here (look at the episode list and click on “Bring Me the Head of Oswaldo Castillo.) Not only was it an awesome episode; it also had a really dark song as the backdrop, Soulmate by Natasha Bedingfield. Medium itself has always been dark, and it was a great finale for NBC before Medium moves from NBC to CBS. I’ll talk about it below.
Edison Chen breaks his silence

Edison Chen
I was surprised this morning to see that Edison Chen was among CNN’s most popular stories. Check it out here. According to the site, you can
Watch the full, exclusive TV interview with Edison Chen on CNN TV and here online on Wednesday, June 3. Chen talks at length to CNN’s Anjali Rao about the women involved in the photographs, why he took the images, the effect the scandal had on his health, his family and others.
Zee Avi
Saw this video of Zee Avi on Youtube. Her music is the Spotlight Tuesday music selection for YouTube. She’s got a powerful voice with some pretty cool, happy tunes. It’s one of the coolest collections I’ve heard in a long time. Zee Avi is from Malaysia, and her debut CD is coming out today. Check it out!
Upcoming Podcasts
![]()
We’re going to have two, possibly three upcoming podcasts. The first will be this coming weekend, and it will be between me and a surprise guest. We will be discussing the large interracial dating/marriage disparity in the Asian American community and its effect on both Asian Americans and non-Asian Americans. We will also discuss the future outlook and what can be done to fix any problems related to the issue. My guest has a loud opinion, and he’s looking forward to sharing it. I’m looking forward to hearing it. I anticipate that this will be fun. It’s an important issue, one which, despite all the typing on the internet, we do not discuss enough in real time.
Um…okay…that makes sense
According to CNN.com, the works of Ayn Rand are experiencing a resurgence in the wake of our financial crisis. Rand was a proponent of free markets, a believer in individualism, and someone who extolled the virtues of selfishness. People have begun to start re-examining her ideas:
“If only ‘Atlas’ were required reading for every member of Congress and political appointee in the Obama administration. I’m confident that we’d get out of the current financial mess a lot faster,” Wall Street Journal columnist Stephen Moore wrote in early January.
The 44s announces its retirement
The Fighting 44s will move from active site to legendary myth. I’m retiring from the site, and the site is retiring from the blogosphere. We’ll party like it’s 1999 until the final bell tolls. The 44s has achieved great things in its short time in the blogosphere, and we will truly miss it.
By the way, check out some of the old archives and stuff from the past. Topics such as covert racism have been covered in relative depth–I say relative because you’ll get a deeper understanding by reading a book, but I know not everyone has the time or inclination to read. Some of the old, super-militant stuff has been deleted because the general populace just isn’t ready for such knowledge or can’t handle the truth.
(Evil laughing sound.) That old stuff will simply have to remain in our memories. 44s forever.
