Scary Thoughts for Your Weekend on the Chinese Economy
Thanks to Alpha Asian, who posted this article on the topic of whether the Chinese are manipulating their currency. According to the article, people in the U.S. take it for granted that China is manipulating its currency, while the Chinese think that American politicians are twisting and oversimplifying a complex issue just before elections.
I think it’s hard to refute that China is controlling its currency. 
It’s quite clear that that is why they’re buying all those treasuries. If they let it float, the reminbi would shoot up.
Obama’s Reputation Falters
Man, look how much can happen in two years: How did Obama Lose his Mojo. It looks like the Dems are running from him in droves, and the GOP–the Party of No–has been very successful in blocking his every move to make sure no Democrat gets credit for any progress in this country.
I agree with the article. I think Obama may have overshot. I don’t fault him for overshooting, but in hindsight, maybe he should have concentrated only on jobs. Healthcare is nice, and it’s very important–maybe important to the point that that was the only time in history they could approve it–but people aren’t going to be happy unless there’s a good economic engine in place. The job market is horrible. People tend to worry when there’s no money coming in.
Asian Racism and the “Asian of Reason”
One of our readers posted a link to the “Asian of Reason” a few days ago. I’m always interested in Asian American opinions, and I was excited about the existence of a new Asian American blog. However, upon a quick reading of the material, much of the material and rhetoric disturbed me. It seemed like the point of the blog was to make the statement that there is a racial hierarchy and that people are the sum of their genes–which comes from race. Some of the views are outright appalling to me. According to the blog, blacks tend to be loud and unruly, Asian men are somehow less “alpha” than white men, and White people…well, I guess White men sit at the top of the hierarchy since the blogger lists “Steve Sailer” in his blogroll. Woo hoo for White Power.

Democratic Capitalism vs. State Capitalism
David Brooks has an interesting article here about the difference between democratic capitalism vs. state capitalism. He focuses on the oil industry. American/European companies like BP and Exxon Mobil work under democratic capitalism and compete in a relatively free market, while state-run energy companies like Petrobras and Gazprom work under state capitalism. The difference in practice is that state run companies become an arm of the government for political aggrandizement, while privately and publicly owned companies serve the interests of shareholders.
China Strikes
Chinese Worker Demonstration Outside Honda Factory
No, “China Strikes” is not the subheading of the new Red Dawn remake. I’m talking about the recent labor demonstrations in China that just fizzled out this morning when Honda responded by advertising open positions and getting scabs to break it up.
It’s clear this strike didn’t work. Still, it’s a step in the right direction. Without a middle class, and without people fighting to make a middle class living, it’s impossible for China to aspire to greater cultural achievements. Of course, towards the end of the article it becomes clear that there’s that small problem of the state controlled media. It’s hard to succeed with a strike when no one else knows about it. Still, that media firewall may eventually fall too as the country and economy and people become too big to micromanage.
John Lim supports the Arizona immigration law
We’ve got one Asian American candidate for governor in Oregon. His name is John Lim, and he’s a tough talking Republican who wants to rid our state of those illegal immigrants that Arizona has been struggling with. He supports Arizona’s new immigration law because “this is not about the racism” and “this is about the respecting our law and order.”
Arizona’s new immigration law allows law enforcement to detain anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant. If you’re a bad speller, does that count as a reason for suspicion? If so, it’s a good thing he doesn’t live in Arizona–the “imigration” police might go after him.
Racist commercial?
I got this one from Tim Yu’s blog. The video above was created by a group called Americans for Job Security to protest against Bill Halter, a candidate for the U.S. Senate from Arkansas. The ad accuses Bill Halter of exporting jobs to Bangalore while he was in the private sector, and it uses South Asian actors who thank Bill Halter for sending jobs to India while pseudo-Indian music plays in the background. Both Bill Halter and his opponent, incumbent Blanche Lincoln, have condemned the ad as racist.

Carbon offsets don't offset
Planes, planes, planes
I’m glad that some travel companies are finally stating that carbon offsets–those extra few bucks that are supposedly used to plant trees in order to “offset” fuel use and other carbon producing activities–don’t work. This is especially true with flying; see the story here. It’s about time someone said something about this.
The question in my mind–a question that the article raises towards the end–is why don’t we have good, fast trains here? When I was in Japan, there was the Shinkansen bullet train that moved so fast you would feel it in your ears. It moves up to 186 miles per hour. One could go from Aomori to Tokyo in just a few hours.
Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

While I think it’s cool that Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize, I wonder…for what?
His presidency just started. So far he hasn’t achieved much of what he has promised–troops are still in Iraq, we still have Guantanamo, we’re still in the worst economic state since the 1930′s, etc. In terms of race relations, he has not stepped up the plate when he could have. He has revealed racism by being who he is, but that’s more a function of who he is rather than what he’s done. I’m not saying that I expected anything within eight months–I’m still overall positive and hopeful–but I think the award comes way too early.
