Podcast: bigWOWO Interviews Dave Porter, Activist for Bilingual Education

Dave Porter
I had the opportunity this past weekend to interview Mr. David Porter, a local Portland activist for bilingual education. Dave has been working with the Oregon State Legislature to bring a greater focus on foreign languages to our schools, and his work heavily emphasizes Mandarin Chinese immersion programs. Download our podcast here, or hear it below:

Podcast: bigWOWO interviews the Alpha Asian

I’m pleased to say that our first podcast of the year took place on Thursday night with fitness trainer and author James Chan from Alpha-Asian. Most of you have probably seen his site, but most of you probably don’t know how he began personal training, why he does it, and what his training philosophy is. Learn about him in our bigWOWO podcast. Download it here, or play it here:

Gender Divide Podcast

Picture from KATU. We got about six inches of snow today. It’s very cold.
We did our big gender divide podcast last night. Participants were the Antisocial Ladder, the Minority Militant, the Alpha-Asian, Winnovative, Larry, Jason, urB4N, and me. You can download it here or listen to it below (though we tried to create two different podcasts, it came out as ONE big audio file, a whopping hour and 34 minutes, 30-something megabytes big):

bigWOWO interviews The Minority Militant

Happy Thanksgiving!

Asian Education Foundation: Podcast

Here is my first podcast on local Portland events/groups. It’s an interview with Victoria Yu, the Executive Director of the Asian Education Foundation. You can download the podcast here, and you can hear it here:

This podcast topic immediately followed our first bigWOWO podcast, and the purpose was to question William over his linking to APB and Johnny. It’s the exact same crew: William, THX, Jason, James, and me. The original question was framed as follows: If your site is an activist site, and if APB and Johnny promote sexist objectification of women, why do you link to them?
big WOWO Podcast: Crabs in a Bucket

This was my first podcast over the phone. The volume goes up and down, and there’s no music, but overall I was satisfied with the quality. Participating in this podcast were William from BetterAsianMan, James from Alpha-Asian, Flipsoul and THX from the Fighting 44s, and me from big WOWO AND the Fighting 44s. The topic was Crabs in a Bucket, which I previously announced here. We discussed when and if it was okay to criticize other Asian people. It was an awesome podcast, and I was happy to have the opportunity to talk with so many smart people. I think we made lots of progress. You guys all taught me something.
THX's Frank Chin Podcast
Here was our second podcast which featured THX1138 and me discussing “The Relevance of Frank Chin.” Since THX has a PhD and wrote a thesis on Asian American literature, it was actually me interviewing him on his ideas about Frank Chin, masculinity, and the future of Asian American literature. There are very few people who have THX’s knowledge about Asian American literature, so it was good to hear. In addition to talking about Chin, THX also talks about Asian American activism and feminism. Again, it was one of our early podcasts, and so you’ll hear us tripping as we try to throw the mic back and forth. We learned later on to trust in Apple and to use the built-in mic instead, which is what you heard in our Olympic podcast and Activism podcast. Enjoy!
Podcast: Anti-Racist Education
Download here.
This was our very first Fighting 44s podcast when we were in Portland last month, and the topic was “Anti-Racist Education.” Somehow we forgot to post it! It’s approximately 30 minutes in length, 13.6 megs, recorded on 8/22/08, and it features nskripchun and Xian, two seasoned professionals in the education system, discussing education and culture as it relates to Asian Americans. Mrs. skrips, who is also a teacher, has a short part too (to set skrips straight!). It’s a good discussion by three expert teachers with experience in the education field. They talk about tests, books, and racial and ethnic stereotypes as they relate to American students. I thought it was interesting because it gave me the opportunity to hear from three people who are on the ground dealing with the system and trying to impart knowledge to young America.
