Stay at home dad groups
| Portland Dads at Home |
I learned of this group maybe a month ago, but they got written up in the Oregonian just this past week. Check out the article here.
I’ve communicated with some of these guys through e-mail, and they seem very nice. I think it’s a great idea for dads to do community activities like this, even those of us who aren’t Stay-at-Home-Dads. We humans are communal animals, and kids have so much more fun when they’re playing with and surrounded by other kids. If Eric, the guy in the video, had success in a small city like Portland, I can imagine that forming a dad’s group would be possible in other cities as well.
Portland Cheap Eating
They had an interesting article on Portland cheap eats yesterday in the NY Times. I’ve eaten at the stands before, but I seriously never knew that it extended that deep. If any of you visit Portland, I know where I’m taking you.
I need to try that blue burger in the video. I think my own burgers are the best in the world–I know I’m better than anything I’ve found so far–but I always welcome competition!
Golden Swan, RIP
I drove all the way out to the other side of Beaverton to eat at my favorite restaurant, the Golden Swan. Few people in Portland know of the Golden Swan. It’s a hole in the wall–the place has no central heating, there’s a quarter inch of grease on all the tables, and the floor gets cleaned once a month. Plus the name of the restaurant changes every couple years, probably because the authorities shut it down for health violations.
Portland, the Whitest Big City in the West

Thanks, Larry, for this article from the Oregonian. My goodness, we’re whiter than Nashville! We should start our own country music scene here.
This part of the article describes the cultural issues accurately:
Portland-area employers competing for top talent have a hard time retaining African American hires, who often can’t bear the social and cultural isolation of a metro area that is less than 3 percent black.
“A lot of my friends and other minorities come here to Portland thinking of it as a stopover,” says Angel Anderson, an African American software engineer from suburban Chicago who was recruited by Intel. “They leave the state in a year or two.”
Podcast: bigWOWO Interviews Dave Porter, Activist for Bilingual Education

Dave Porter
I had the opportunity this past weekend to interview Mr. David Porter, a local Portland activist for bilingual education. Dave has been working with the Oregon State Legislature to bring a greater focus on foreign languages to our schools, and his work heavily emphasizes Mandarin Chinese immersion programs. Download our podcast here, or hear it below:
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
The podcast is around 30 minutes, 13.7 megs.

Merry Christmas!

l to r: the inventor of the term "bigWOWO" and the webmaster
We’ve been snowed in for a week now. However, I’m happy since this is the first snowy Portland Christmas that I remember.
Hope everyone is safe and warm!
John Jay Talks about Chinatown and Portland

John Jay
Thanks to David, who told me about this article in yesterday’s Oregonian. It’s an excellent article about a local Asian American businessman who is taking care of business at the ground level by building up the culture of Portland. I love the fact that John Jay is working with business and government leaders in order to develop Chinatown, I love the fact that he’s concentrating on the cultural aspects of the city, I love the fact that he consciously reflects on ethnicity, and I love the fact that he has put so much time, money, and effort in making our city better. Oh, and I love the fact that Studio J was one of Thymos’s Gold Sponsors for Frank Chin. Check out this part of the interview:
The Great Portland Ramen Controversy, Part II
I blogged about an incident at my local Asian grocery a while back. In that post, I recounted the story of how I was surprised at the checkout when I was denied a discount on a package of instant ramen due to a technicality that was printed only in a non-English language. On the Thymos listserve, this became known as the “Great Portland Ramen Controversy.”
The World Outside and the Post-Election Portland Fervor

Portland
Yesterday I drove to downtown Portland for a 7 pm Thymos meeting. It was my first time out of the hospital since Tuesday when my daughter was born. Usually eastbound traffic is bad around 4:30, terrible from 5 until around 5:45, and progressively better after that. However, when I left my house around 6:30 yesterday, it was like rush hour.
Wordstock
Getting the word out to all those in Portland–Wordstock is coming up next week on November 7-9, 2008. Go here for more info. Wordstock is the biggest book festival in Portland. Last year, Adrian Tomine was here. I would’ve loved to see him talk about Shortcomings. If anyone hasn’t yet checked out Shortcomings, I can all but guarantee that you’ll like it.
I love books, I read all the time, and I’m constantly talking about books, but I don’t think I have ever been to an actual book festival. And unfortunately, depending on circumstances beyond my control, I may miss this one too.
