Congratulations, Miss Asian Oregon 2009!

Miss Asian Oregon Pageant from Daniel Liffick on Vimeo.

Congratulations to the 2009-2010 Miss Asian Oregon Royal Court!  The winners (with their titles and platforms) are:

Miss Luketan Somnasang, Miss Asian Oregon, Renewable Energy

Miss Gina Songkham, First Princess, Inspiring Young Asian Americans to Achieve

Miss Soohyun Park, Second Princess, Bridging Different Cultures

Luketan is an accountant with PGE, Gina is a college student, and Soohyun is a final year law student.  All are serious about using their voices to make an impact.   They did a phenomenal job presenting their ideas on the day of the competition, and it was truly amazing to see it all come together after so many weeks of preparation.

Thymos Weekend: Anti-Pageant

INDIA KASHMIR PROTEST

(pic from here)

Man, what a wild and fun weekend!  On Saturday, we had the Miss Asian Oregon Pageant.  Yesterday, we had the anti-Pageant.  Both events were lots of fun.

I wanted to put a post for each event.  Even though the Pageant came first, I thought it best to post the anti-Pageant first, because while the anti-Pageant is over, the pageant has just begun–hopefully we will have opportunities for the new Royal Court to use their crowns to inspire and raise awareness of their platforms over the next year.  Also, since the anti-Pageant was a bit more negative than the Pageant (in my opinion anyway), I thought it best for the positive voices to get the last word.  So this is my anti-Pageant post.

Miss Asian Oregon

mao

Okay, time for an exciting announcement. I am the co-owner of the Miss Asian Oregon Pageant, and we will be having our inaugural event on October 10th, 2009 down in Salem. My partner Michelle is a former contestant/finalist and law firm owner, and we are totally psyched about doing this. Our emcee/organizer Liani is a prominent public official and lawyer activist. We now have all of our contestants, and we’re ready to rock the state of Oregon.

Marketing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools

My son’s school ends before the work day, so when I pick him, we often have free time.  I’ve recently been trying to find some activity to get into shape–other than running, which kills my knees–and since there’s a well regarded Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school around the area, I thought I’d pop in. I don’t know if I’d have time to make the class times, but it never hurts to look, right?

George Katagiri: Heroes

George Katagiri in 1951

George Katagiri in 1951

This is the kind of story that I find interesting.

George Katagiri (grandfather of Zach, who is on this blog and the co-owner of Peachyhost, which houses Thymos.org) was the elementary and high school teacher of Joan Harvey, a reporter for the Oregonian.  Harvey recounts how whenever her district administrators would ask her to write down the names of her best teachers, she would write, “”Mr. Katagiri, Mr. Katagiri and Mr. Katagiri.”

Check out the story.  George Katagiri was controversial from the start:

Hey All,

Sorry for being delinquent on updates.

My big athletic event, the one that I’ve been training for for the past few months, took place this weekend.  On Friday and Saturday, I ran the Nike Hood to Coast.  It’s a 197 mile relay, the longest relay in the whole world.  See the picture of our awesome Van 1 team above (courtesy of Kong and Phong).  See a picture of me in my nerd goggles running below (courtesy of Kong):

Heat Wave

Squirrel trying to cool off

Squirrel trying to cool off

It is ridiculously hot out there.  It looks like we’re going to be hitting 107 degrees Fahrenheit (41.7 degrees Centigrade) today for our hottest temperature in Portland history, and it looks like we’re also going to be entering the longest stretch of >100 degree weather in history.  It’s crazy.  I don’t feel like working, getting out, or doing anything.  It’s all veging out for me until this heat wave passes.
