The Return of Depression Economics

I just finished reading Paul Krugman’s The Return of Depression Economics and the Crisis of 2008. It’s a great little book that takes novices on a quick walk through the history of economics since the Great Depression.  Krugman argues that depressions and recessions come from runs (bank runs, shadow banking runs, house sell-offs), and that the remedy is to bring back confidence in spending.

John Liu Wins Democratic Nomination for Comptroller

30elect_650

John Liu won the Democratic nomination for City Comptroller of New York City yesterday.  Because New York City is controlled by the Democrats, this basically assures him a victory in the November election.  Assuming he wins, he’ll be the first Asian American to hold elected city-wide office in New York City.  I’ve seen Liu speak before, and he’s the real deal.  He does his job well, and he’s outspoken on Asian American issues.

His new job is going to be a pretty serious responsibility:

Our Sam Yoon Campaign

I wanted to give us a little time to bask in our one year birthday before business as usual.  Thanks again, everyone, for making this place what it is.

So…back to business.  As I’m sure some of you already know, Sam Yoon lost last night. He had 21% of the vote compared to Michael Flaherty’s 24%, so Flaherty will be running against Menino in November.  Not only did he lose the mayoral race, but he also now becomes a lame duck councilor who will lose his seat in January.  You can see his concession speech above (or here if the embedded video doesn’t work).  As all of you know, bigWOWO readers contributed $250 for Sam, and we were working hard to get him a win.

Sex, Lies, and Paternity

John Edwards

John Edwards

Good thing this guy didn’t win.

From CNN:

Former Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards talked a campaign aide into claiming he fathered a child born to Edwards’ onetime mistress, sources familiar with the issue said Monday.

Edwards admitted to his affair with Rielle Hunter in August 2008 after months of denials, but said he could not have been the father of Hunter’s daughter, who was born the previous February. Former Edwards staffer Andrew Young has said he was the girl’s father — but has recanted and says he made it because he believed in Edwards, lawyers and others familiar with the matter told CNN.

We hit our Sam Yoon goal!

Thanks to Asianguy, TMM, and uRB4N who helped bigWOWO achieve its goal of raising $250 for Sam Yoon.  This was the first goal that we as a website have set, and we did it!  Special thanks to uRB4N who contributed over 85% of the funds!  Thanks to everyone here who publicized for Sam, to everyone who discussed Sam, and to everyone who has kept this website going strong.  The vast majority of us are from out of state, and I’m so happy that we were able to help Sam in his campaign.

Boys and Presidents

“Beyond a reasonable doubt” is the criteria that courts in America use to convict felons.  This means that in order to get a conviction, one don’t need a smoking gun; all one needs is evidence that brings the case to a point where a person would be unable to reasonably doubt that the perp did it.

Maureen Dowd had a great Op-Ed in the Times today.  In her piece, she indicates that she believes that racism played a part in Joseph Wilson’s rude, disrespectful, and uncouth outburst when he shouted “You lie!” at President Obama.  She makes a really good case.  Check it out:

Eating Right

APAP has the full transcription of Obama’s health care speech yesterday for those who want to check it out.  I believe in universal health care, and I would like to see some improvement in this area, but I haven’t looked at the numbers of Obama’s plan to really think through if it would really work.  In my industry, we’ve seen Obama’s Home Affordable Refinance Program, and because so much of that plan is based on the voluntary participation of the already skittish banks who are lending the money, HARP has been a complete failure.  Obama should have thought it through before signing.

Tila Tequila: Not Really Feeling It

I’m going to have to write this post without a pic.  Because if I included a pic, it would have to be one of the subject, Tila Nguyen, aka Tila Tequila, and I find her repulsive and gross.  As many of you probably have heard by now, Tila Tequila accused her boyfriend, Shawne Merriman, of choking her and keeping her in his home against her will over the weekend.  Merriman says that the charges are false and that he was simply trying to keep her from driving drunk.  Tila says that she wasn’t drinking because she is allergic to alcohol, but the man who owns the nightclub where the two were hanging out said that several employees saw Tequila drinking tequila and vodka.  Which raises two questions–first, there’s a difference in the two stories, and we’ll have to wait to hear what the truth is.  Second, why would you change your name from Tila Nguyen to Tila Tequila if you can’t even drink the stuff?

The Right to Die

The Putticks

The Putticks

I’ve seen a number of interesting articles on suicide recently, and I was interested in whether the readers here had any opinions.  First, there was this sad story that I saw on BicoastalBitchin–a cute little boy dies of an infection, and his distraught parents kill themselves by jumping off a 500 foot cliff (see pic above).  Then, there was the story of the eminent orchestra conductor Sir Edward Downes, who killed himself in order to die with his terminally ill wife.  Then yesterday, there was the story of a man in Britain who was jailed for giving his terminally ill father a gun to kill himself.  Along the way, there was also the story of Ron Takaki, pre-eminent Asian American historian, who killed himself ostensibly over an illness.

Give to Sam Yoon

I missed the August deadline (sorry Sagar), but the election is just 20 days away. If you are an American who has five or ten bucks to spare, please visit bigwowo’s fundraising page and drop a few Washingtons and Lincolns in the bucket.  Sam really does need your money, and Asian America really does need strong, responsible leaders like Sam Yoon.  Give up your Starbucks for two days, and you could help Sam make history.  To see my previous fundraising post on why I’m supporting Sam, go here.
