Marketing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools

My son’s school ends before the work day, so when I pick him, we often have free time.  I’ve recently been trying to find some activity to get into shape–other than running, which kills my knees–and since there’s a well regarded Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school around the area, I thought I’d pop in. I don’t know if I’d have time to make the class times, but it never hurts to look, right?

Conditional Parenting

(originally posted on Rice Daddies)

There was an interesting article in the NY Times today about “conditional parenting,” which the author describes as a style of child rearing in which parents “turn up the affection when they’re good, withhold affection when they’re not.” The author points to evidence that this parenting style may create more compliance in children, but that it also creates more psychological issues when children become adults. The author criticizes Supernanny Jo Frost and Dr. Phil as people who advocate for conditional parenting. This article is currently the most popular on the NY Times site.

Families and their money

The NY Times had a great Motherlode blog post here: When a Mother Ruins a Son’s Credit Score.  It’s about a mother who persuaded her son to open a credit card while he was in college.  She told him it was a joint account, but it was actually his application with her as an authorized user, and she charged it up and stuck him with the debt.  Read both the post and the comments–they’re very interesting.  Some of the commenters have stories about parents opening utility bills in their kids’ names.  It’s incredible what some parents will do to their kids.

Heat Wave

Squirrel trying to cool off

Squirrel trying to cool off

It is ridiculously hot out there.  It looks like we’re going to be hitting 107 degrees Fahrenheit (41.7 degrees Centigrade) today for our hottest temperature in Portland history, and it looks like we’re also going to be entering the longest stretch of >100 degree weather in history.  It’s crazy.  I don’t feel like working, getting out, or doing anything.  It’s all veging out for me until this heat wave passes.

Raising a Karate Kid

I blogged a few months ago about martial arts and kids.  Remember this?  And this?

A few days ago, I decided that I was going to give it a shot by teaching my son how to throw a punch.  I taught the Gun-Gun to curl his hand in a fist.  It didn’t look right, so we worked on it until it sort of resembled a fist.  Then I instructed him to punch a pillow.  I showed him how.

Podcast: Sam Yoon, Candidate for Mayor of Boston

Sam Yoon and Family

Today I had a podcast with Sam Yoon, Candidate for Mayor of Boston.  Intern Sagar Sane, who made all the arrangements for the podcast and who is helping with internet publicity, was also present.  The podcast is 46 minutes and 13 seconds long.  For those who are following my ridiculous ongoing battle to get GarageBand ’08 to import large files directly to mp3, this time I WON, and the podcast is a sleek and slim 21.2 megs.  Download it here, or listen to it here:

Single Black Women Adopting

Wendy Duren with her beautiful daughter Madison

Wendy Duren with her beautiful daughter Madison

I saw this beautiful, though somewhat sad, article on CNN today.  Black women are choosing to adopt without waiting for a man to come around.  These black women are successful, strong, and accomplished, but they have not found men who will marry them or treat them with respect.  Many have decided to go ahead and move forward with motherhood.  It’s beautiful because these women are empowered and not allowing society to hold them back, but it’s sad because these men are turning down something good.

Stay at home dad groups

Portland Dads at Home

I learned of this group maybe a month ago, but they got written up in the Oregonian just this past week. Check out the article here.

I’ve communicated with some of these guys through e-mail, and they seem very nice. I think it’s a great idea for dads to do community activities like this, even those of us who aren’t Stay-at-Home-Dads. We humans are communal animals, and kids have so much more fun when they’re playing with and surrounded by other kids. If Eric, the guy in the video, had success in a small city like Portland, I can imagine that forming a dad’s group would be possible in other cities as well.

Chinese Language DVDs: Mei Mei Hu

video01

Edit: Okay, I just saw some of the later videos, so I have to correct what I wrote.  Some of the later DVDs in the series are quite high tech and shot from China.  They look like they had professional choreographers and makeup artists, and the sound quality is professional.  So the following only applies to the other ones we saw.  My bad, Mei Mei.

First Missing Child on a Milk Carton Still Missing

Etan Patz, first missing child to appear on a milk carton

Does everyone remember the missing kids on milk cartons during the 80′s?  It looks like the very first missing child on a milk carton is still missing after 30 years.  It looks like the authorities are relatively certain they know who was involved with his disappearance, but the family has yet to find closure.
