Osama Bin Laden Killed
This just in, and I’m sure there will be more info coming soon: Osama Bin Laden, mastermind of 9/11, has been killed in Abbottabad. Obama is going to be giving a speech shortly.
Edit 10:46pm: I posted this on RiceDaddies: “This isn’t Daddy-related, but today is a historic day. Osama Bin Laden was killed by Navy Seals today. He was living in a large city of about a million people, and the Navy took him out in a firefight. Reports are saying that his son was also killed. According to early reports, the U.S. carried out the mission independently and only told the Pakistani government after the fact. More information is probably going to be coming out in the next week or so.”

UFC 129: Machida is BACK!
If there was ever a UFC fight that you didn’t want to miss, this was it. It was hands down the best fight card I’d ever seen, and when they brought it on, the fights were even better than I thought they’d be. There were 55,000 people in attendance. EVERY fight was good. The weakest fight was the main event with St. Pierre vs. Shields, and even that one was good. The rest of the fights were amazing.
The Royal Wedding and Royalty
As everyone knows, Prince William and Kate Middleton were married yesterday. It was at 1 am Pacific time, so I didn’t stay up to see it, but I just saw some of the 20/20 coverage. I have to say–they both looked really good. I rarely follow fashion, but I loved Kate’s dress.
Royalty serves a great function. Think about it. What percentage of Americans think positively about Obama? Probably around 50%, more or less. What percentage think positively of Tony Blair? Probably around 50%, more or less. Same with Gordon Brown. What percentage love the royal family in Britain? Probably EVERYONE.

I was going to post this. And then I wasn’t going to post this. And then I decided to post this. So here it is, two articles: Exchange student slain after frantic friend watches webcam attack and Was York U student stalked before her death? It’s a sad story. 23 year old exchange student Qian Liu was talking on the webcam with her boyfriend in China, and in the middle of their conversation, a white guy knocks on her door, struggles with her, and turns off her laptop. The guy in China notifies authorities, but by the time the landlord gets there, she’s dead, naked from the waist down with her pyjamas pulled over her chest. There is evidence that she was being stalked, but we don’t yet know if the stalker and the murderer are the same guy.
No House, No Date!
Look what’s on the NY Times front page: For Many Chinese Men, No Deed Means No Dates. (Awesome picture, too.) Yikes, even guys in the motherland have got it tough. The article says:

Given that even a cramped, two-bedroom apartment on the dusty fringe of the capital sells for about $150,000, Mr. Wang’s $900-a-month salary means he may forever be condemned to the ranks of the renting.
Tony Hsieh of Zappos and the pursuit of fun
Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh is continuing to rise in popularity and power. He has been building Zappos (which he sold to Amazon for over a billion dollars in 2009) into an online shoe powerhouse, and he’s been making the rounds by throwing parties, being a guest judge on the Celebrity Apprentice, and running training camps on the Zappos ethos. His newest project is revitalizing part of Las Vegas.
Writer of New Malcolm X Biography Dies Three Days Before Publication

I know there are some HUGE Malcolm X fans on this site (including me). I thought you’d find this story and book interesting: On Eve of Redefining Malcolm X, Biographer Dies. Manning Marable, a Columbia University professor, spent 20 years working on his magnus opus, a 594 page biography of the late human rights leader. The books was set to come out tomorrow, but he died on Friday. I’m glad he completed the book, but it’s sad that he won’t get to see it come out.
Chinese Maternity Tourists
Hope the NY Times paywall isn’t bothering y’all, but here’s an interesting one: Officials Close ‘Maternity Tourism’ House in California.
According to the story, there was a “maternity tourism” house where wealthy Chinese women stayed in order to have babies while on tourist visas. Aside from the zoning law violations against the owner of the home, no laws were broken. It’s perfectly legal to have babies in this country on a tourist visa. You can travel here, give birth to an American citizen, and go back to China. If the s#$t hits the fan in China, your baby cannot be stripped of his citizenship, so he or she will always have a home here. Man, talk about do-it-yourself Asian Americans. It’s like the Home Depot slogan–”You can do it, we can help.”
Aomori, Japan
I landed in Aomori, Japan in 1997 when I was 21 years old. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, but a large English instruction school in Japan had recruited at my college campus, and I thought Japan might be interesting, especially since I had an interest in judo. I decided to interview and suddenly found myself with a job teaching conversational English. I waited until the company was ready to take me, and then I headed out first to Tokyo and then to Aomori.
NY Times begins charging for content
…and OUCH. I knew they were going to charge, but man, they really decided to CHARGE.

$15 every four weeks, which is $195 a year for online access. Compare this to the Wall Street Journal, which is $104 a year. That’s brutal. Both are brutal. I understand that the news isn’t free, but to go from free to $195 is crazy! I was one of the people who used to pay $5 a month for access to the Op-Eds, so I was expecting something more in line with $5 a month. They may have priced me out of the market with this one though, especially in this economy.
