Chan Sung Jung the “Korean Zombie” and the Twister

Thanks, Danny Lee, for pointing me to the awesome “twister” submission by Chan Sung Jung, the Korean Zombie, this weekend in his win over Leonard Garcia. For you hardcore MMA fans, this was supposed to be Nam Phan’s shot at redemption after his very controversial loss to Garcia last year. Unfortunately, Phan was injured and couldn’t fight, so Chan Sung Jung, another recipient of a bad decision against Garcia, got his shot at redemption.

Chan won by a twister, the first ever twister in the UFC.  You can see the picture above.  The twister is a neck crank, a modified wrestling move popularized by Eddie Bravo.  If you want to learn how to do it yourself, see Eddie Bravo’s instructional here:

UFC 127: Dana White Says BJ Won, Michael Bisping Proves He’s an Affirmative Action Case

I had a long conversation this weekend with a friend about UFC, and I came to the conclusion that all sports are the same–unless you know the styles/personalities behind the players, it’s boring because there is simply no drama.  With the UFC this past weekend, there was plenty of drama.  Two fights in particular were interesting.

No surprises in Silva vs. Belfort

If anyone is wondering why I haven’t been blogging about the UFC fights, tonight pretty much sums it up.  I watched the prelims, and when Joe Rogan started saying that this was “the most anticipated middleweight title fight in MMA history,” I knew it was time to turn off the TV.

Chael Sonnen Pleads Guilty to Money Laundering/UFC 125 Updates

Chael Sonnen got caught and pleaded guilty to steroid use after nearly beating Anderson Silva.  He somehow managed to get his suspension reduced from a year to six months.  But now…money laundering?  According to the Oregonian, while working as a Realtor for John L. Scott, Sonnen had an escrow company write a $69,000 check to a plumbing company for work that was never done.  That’s highly illegal.  Sonnen pleaded guilty in federal court.  I normally would be angry at Chael since I used to always cheer for his opponents, but I have to at least acknowledge that he’s bringing some excitement outside the cage to make up for the lay-and-pray snooze fest that he usually brings into the cage.

Nam Phan and the Semi-Finals

I’m a week behind with this episode of the Aftermath, but check out Nam Phan above, and then check out the AWESOME OneVietnam.org article about him here (thanks, N!). Also check out the interview by Jeff from 8Asians.  The guy is super humble, and I love his work ethic. He’s going to go far no matter how this tournament turns out. I’m rooting for either him or Brookins to take the whole thing. I think they’re of similar mind. Check out the video above where Brookins is wearing a “Nam Phan for Mayor” T-shirt.

Pacquiao Wins Title; Okami Wins on Points, Gets Title Shot

I couldn’t get out to see the Pacquiao-Margarito fight last night, but I read that it was total domination.  Pacquiao hit Margarito so hard and so many times that one of his eyes was shut and the second out was about to be shut.  Pacquiao actually backed off in the last couple rounds because he was afraid of permanently damaging Margarito.  He came into the fight weighing nine pounds less than the allowable weight, and he still managed to dominate.  Pacquiao is the first man to win championships in eight different weight classes.  The only missing feat on his record is Floyd Mayweather, who has ducked the fight with all kinds of excuses and requirements.

Bullying, Gracie Jujitsu, and the Gracie Bullyproof DVD Program (Review)

I saw this article in the Christian Science Monitor about a woman whose child was bullied.  She responded by taking her child to learn Gracie Jujitsu, where they have a program called Bullyproof.  She took her son to the park after he learned GJJ, and what followed was some scary behavior on her son’s part, which this woman not only condones but praises!  While I appreciate everything that the Gracies have done for Mixed Martial Arts (my favorite spectator sport by far) and martial arts in general, I’m not in agreement with how they teach children to verbally deal with bullies.  See here:

bigWOWO Fall Break and Things You Should See

I’m taking a little break from blogging while I try to put some accomplishments under my belt.  Or at least some preliminary accomplishments that I can brag about on this blog, even if they aren’t brag-worthy (or blog-worthy).  I’ve gone too long without an accomplishment, and now I have three goals.  It’ll probably be a couple of weeks or so–less if I accomplish my three goals early; more if it takes longer.  In the meantime, you can find me on e-mail if you need to reach me.

So some recommendations and UFC predictions before I go:

Cain Velasquez wins UFC Heavyweight Title; Diego impresses

Jon Kopaloff/Getty Images

Well, Frank, you and I got two out of five for UFC 121.  I think that’s much better than I usually do by myself (although to be fair, you did the picking yourself and I just went along for the ride)!  :)

Diego showed heart.  When he picked up Thiago, screaming and running to the center of the Octagon, I think that was one of the best things I have seen.  He needed this win, and he got it.  I hope he makes his comeback.

Cody McKenzie’s Guillotine

Did anyone see tonight’s episode of the Ultimate Fighter? I think Cody McKenzie’s fight was among the best I’ve seen.  And that guillotine of his is amazing.  He even named it after himself; he calls it the “McKenzietine.”  Cody, who was GSP’s #6 pick, choked out Koschek’s #1 pick Marc Stevens in 18 seconds, setting a TUF submission record.  It was so fast that Stevens fell asleep.
