Drifting House by Krys Lee (Review)

bigWOWO rating: Literary Fiction Gold
I don’t remember where I heard of this book, but check out Drifting House by Krys Lee. It’s a collection of short stories about Koreans and Korean Americans, mostly Koreans, and taking place on both sides of the 38th parallel.

The Three Kinds of WM/AF (White Male/Asian Female) Portrayals
I’ve been reading the Joyce Wu comments with interest. She’s been taking some heat, and I don’t think it’s fair. As y’all know, we go through these gender wars from time to time, and I thought I should clarify something for the men here: Not all WM/AF portrayals are the same, and I think that some of these portrayals are better than others. To make it easy, I’ve broken them down by category. Usually works fall into one category, but they can also be in more than one at once (Free Food for Millionaires, for example, is both Porn and Heartfelt at the same time. And as I said below, there’s nothing wrong with Porn–as long as you call it what it is. I’m being serious here too–even a powerful author like Christos Tsiolkas has said that he has some major pornographic elements in his work.)

Joyce Wu: Writer, Actress, Filmmaker (Podcast)

I had the opportunity tonight to speak with Joyce Wu, an actress, writer, and filmmaker who is currently making her first feature film. In the podcast, we talk about art, her new film project, and AF/WM. It’s 16 megs, 35 minutes. Download it here, or listen to it here:

Asian American Basketball Leagues
![]()
Found this article indirectly through Alpha-Asian: The Asian American Basketball Leagues That Helped Create Linsanity. Check it out; it’s a very well-researched article.
Also check out another great article about Jeremy Lin’s effect on these Asian American basketball leagues and the related video below. It looks like it goes both ways–these leagues have facilitated Linsanity, and Linsanity is affecting the leagues.
I’ve heard of these Asian American Basketball Leagues, although I will admit that I’ve never been to a game or participated in one. I have some business associates who grew up in Portland and both coached and played in Japanese American leagues. My interest in basketball is about three weeks old, so I’m just catching up.
Wing Chun fun
For those guys who are young, single martial arts instructors, I’ve just found you your dream job.
(The airline has said that it’s a marketing move rather than something for real safety benefits.)

ESPN senior director is proud of his own ignorance
Man, ESPN continues to have problems with their content creators. First, they had a White guy who said “chink” with commentary on Jeremy Lin, before having a guy who wrote the same thing in a headline. Then they called a Korean guy a “gook.” Now they’ve reached the lowest of the lows: an Asian American guy named Lynn Hoppes who is implying that we should all laugh at Jason Whitlock’s tweet and stop cheering for Jeremy based on ethnicity: Stop the Linsanity insanity. Hoppes says that he himself laughed at the racist tweet, and that people should stop assuming that Asian Americans are crazy about the Linsanity.
One Broke Girl and One Asian Web Master
Thought some of you PUAs and militant types might like the clip above. See it on the CBS website here. A little while back, there was some dealio with 2 Broke Girls racist something or other, and I think this was an attempt to make up for it by giving the blonde broke girl a one night stand with an Asian dude. I must say: I think it’s great whenever they give Asian actors a chance.
(I’ve not seen this show and therefore can’t comment on anything other than the clip. Thanks, JJ, for the lead.)
The Slowing Rate of Cultural Change

Are the Oscars Stuck in the Past? The article talks about how the awards pretty much went to the tried-and-true, that everyone was older, and that there was no challenge to the racial norms. Viola Davis didn’t win. The CNN article argues that the Oscars are stuck in the past.
I didn’t see the awards yesterday, but I think that culture in general has been stuck in the past for a very long time. The TV airwaves consist of lots of remakes, and fashion has hardly budged. It reminds me a lot of this excellent Vanity Fair piece last year: You Say You Want a Devolution? (Picture above is from Vanity Fair.) Fashion hardly moves these days, and outside of the technology that now lives in our iPhones, cell phones, and iPads, not much has changed. The auhtor Kurt Andersen writes:
First “Chink,” and now “Gook”

Man, what a hard week for ESPN. First, they had Max Bretos, who used the term “Chink in their armor” to describe Jeremy Lin. Then they had Anthony Federico, who wrote a headline with the words “Chink In Their Armor” to describe Lin again. Now someone wrote about a Korean soccer player with the words, “Gook double earns victory.” The player’s name is Lee Dong-Gook, which means his surname is Lee. His name isn’t “Gook,” the same way my name isn’t “Ron,” the same way a guy named “Brian” isn’t “Ian.”
The Asian Backstreet Boys?
Saw the video above with Neaato.org‘s hilarious Facebook comment:
are these guys liike the asian backstreet boys? also, 5 azn dudes after 1 white girl. so….asian guys want the white girl, asian girls want the white guy. white guys want the asian girl. white girl wants…jeremy lin until he loses. kidding.
Does the white girl in the video even have any idea what these guys are singing about? Bigbang? Is this kind of like the TV show, Korean (plus white woman) version?
