Check out the above interview with performance artist Christine Sun Kim. Kim has been deaf since birth but has found a way to explore sound. I don’t watch much performance art, but there is something very powerful and mind-expanding in what she’s saying and visually expressing.
Literary Young People
Interesting article here: The Literary Cubs. It’s about a group of young, recent grads who, disillusioned with or unable to make livable wages in the traditional publishing industry, took it upon themselves to form a literary group and web publication. They meet in person for regular meetings, and they publish. Their web publication has grown big, and it’s going into print very soon. You can see them at thenewinquiry.com.
I have no idea what the future of publishing is. I don’t think radical minorities would fit in with this club. But it’s great that there are people passionate enough to throw themselves into the mix like this. It should give people hope that no matter what the economy does, literature and criticism will still survive.

Chink is a slasher movie with a message. With this film, we intend to explore issues about racial identity and self-hate, but stories about identity politics don’t have to take themselves so seriously. They can have blood, guts, and sex too.

There’s some kind of Facebook application that shows what my friends read. I don’t know if they elect to show the world what they read or whether it’s one of those apps that downloads itself automatically.
Anyway, some of my friends were reading about James Deen, who’s a really young skinny Jewish male porn star whom (apparently) women like to watch. He’s more of a girl’s fantasy than a man’s fantasy, which is why he is popular with teenaged girls. So I was reading down the article, which led me to another article about Deen, and this article said:

I saw this yesterday. It’s about David Henry Hwang’s Chinglish, and it was one of the most e-mailed articles. Thank goodness it was Thanksgiving, and I knew better than to let the orientalists ruin my day. Even after all these years, I’m always surprised at the propaganda that certain Asian American playwrights and film producers throw at us.
Reverse Racebending
I heard about Quentin Lee’s Today Has Been Weird from AngryAsianMan. It’s a short film, and it’s good: see the entire short movie above. It is based on a real life incident where a young 19 year Asian American boy named Simon Sek Man Ng blogged about his sister’s ex-boyfriend knocking on his door. The boyfriend ended up killing both Simon and his sister. The police used to information from his blog to find his killer.

I’ve been attending online “webinars” this week, learning about the publishing industry and social media. I’ve learned tons of interesting things about e-publishing, traditional publishing, Twitter, Facebook, and everything. Man, online learning really is the way of the future. I got to learn all this without even flying to New York.
Asian Stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
This isn’t something that I think about much (since I don’t live near Hollywood), but there was an article on CNN about the Hollywood Walk of Fame and minority representation. According to the article, Asians are falling behind just about everyone else. I was pleasantly surprised that the article devoted ample coverage to the Asian thing.

By the end of 2011 — with a few more minority celebrities scheduled to be honored this year — the Walk of Fame will have 77 stars overall given to Latinos, 119 stars to African-Americans or African-American ensembles (three of those performers — Nat “King” Cole, Lena Horne and Sarah Vaughn — have a second star, but they are counted only once), and only 10 stars to Asians, according to the chamber.

It’s been awhile since we talked about publishing, but as we’re getting ready to publish the Thymos anthology (which has some excellent work), I’ve been talking and hearing a lot about publishing. Libby Hellman has published her seven novels both traditionally and through e-publishing. In the video above, she talks about traditional publishing vs. e-publishing, and how each has advantages.
