How to Make Music Videos Starring Asian Guys

(Edit 12/25/10: See P2H’s points about it being a matter of taste here.  It could be that Siow’s video is part of a genre that appealed less to both me and the original person who sent this.  It clearly isn’t universal, and it probably shouldn’t be universal.  :)   As always, it’s good to get awesome comments.  Thanks also to King, Crazy MM’er, and N!)

Gatekeepers and Phantom Players

This post comes from a combination of three web-based writings that I’ve seen on the web.  The first was this hilarious post by Abagond, about the six blind men touching an elephant.

In the post, he talks about how each blind man has an opinion on what an elephant is: the guy who touches the tusks thinks it’s like a spear, the guy who touches the side thinks it’s like a wall, the one who touches the trunk thinks it’s a snake, and so on.  In Abagond’s example, however, the guy who touches the trunk and believes he’s touching a snake is the only English speaking white man, and because he owns CNN, the NY Times, the top universities, and all the other media channels, the world comes to believe that elephants are snakes.

Thoughts on Dr. Laura Schlessinger and other racial stuff

Dr. Laura Schlessinger

I wanted to drop a few words about Dr. Laura Schlessinger, and I figured that I could also drop a few words about Rick Sanchez, Juan Williams, and the Chinese Professor Ad at the same time since they’re all somewhat related to race and media.

1, I’ve already covered Rick Sanchez.  He said nothing anti-Semitic, and it’s sad that the media slammed a man over nothing.  It’s sad that the media fired the only major Hispanic newsman.  I’ve fielded e-mails from people calling him a talentless hack (I’ve never seen his show myself), but that’s different from being anti-Semitic.  Rick made a living from sharing opinions, and the firing was unjustified.

Asian Racism and the “Asian of Reason”

One of our readers posted a link to the “Asian of Reason” a few days ago.  I’m always interested in Asian American opinions, and I was excited about the existence of a new Asian American blog.  However, upon a quick reading of the material, much of the material and rhetoric disturbed me.  It seemed like the point of the blog was to make the statement that there is a racial hierarchy and that people are the sum of their genes–which comes from race.  Some of the views are outright appalling to me. According to the blog, blacks tend to be loud and unruly, Asian men are somehow less “alpha” than white men, and White people…well, I guess White men sit at the top of the hierarchy since the blogger lists “Steve Sailer” in his blogroll.  Woo hoo for White Power.

Building Subcultures and Accepting Emotions

Quest Crew

I’m at the car dealership right now, getting one of the seatbelts on my car fixed. I accidentally broke it while installing a car seat, and now it’s gonna cost me. But man, this waiting room is high tech. Free wireless, free donuts, free coffee, lots of big screen TVs with CNBC. Plus a kids area.

The “Community Store” Experience

Does anyone out there watch the Bachelor/Bachelorette? I don’t. But people in my office often talk about it, so I went on Hulu to see the video above (I cut it for y’all so that you only have to watch the interview.)

Black Sheep of the Blogosphere

I know you, you know me
I’m the black sheep of the family,
I’m in an’ out of trouble
I’m the talk of the town
I get wild in the street
When the sun goes down
I steal around, like a thief in the night
Dancing ’til the break of day

The Asian Female Celebrity Club (AFCC) Embargo

Et tu, Jarah?

(pic from here)

Jarah Mariano is the very first woman of Asian descent to become a Victoria’s Secret model. And like almost all of our Asian American female “firsts,” she’s dating a White guy.  We support our celebrities, but they don’t date us or any men of color.  It’s like there’s a Asian Female Celebrity Club (I’m adding this one to my lexicon, along with “community store”) that somehow decided that men of color would be excluded from their dating pool.  When we see that the AFCC members as a general rule don’t date us, it kills us a little bit.  We feel shortchanged, especially given how hard we work to promote Asian Americans trying to make a name for themselves.

Asian Women and the Invisible Chain

Zhang Ziyi--does her personal racial preference really matter?

If you’re an Asian male, look at the picture above, along with the caption.  Think about your very first impression.  What goes through your mind?  Do you feel any kind of change in your thinking or emotion?  Now read further.

This post comes off of the Jamie Yeo thread, where in the midst of the IR debate, kobukson criticizes some Asian men by writing:

Another mistake: making Asian women the focal point of the IR discussion. Why do they do this? Why do they do that? Why do so many Asian girls hook up with dorky white guys? Blah Blah Blah. Screw it.
