Verbal chinkage vs. written chinkage, and the difference between speaking and hearing

Some of this is taken from a conversation with my good friend NB, who is Caucasian and reads this blog.

So as y’all know, there were different punishments for ESPN editor Anthony Federico (pictured above) and ESPN anchorman Max Bretos who respectively wrote a headline and made a comment about “chink in the armor” when talking about Jeremy Lin. Quite a few people on FB and e-mail (and here!) have pointed out that the situations are different because it’s easier to misspeak than it is to mis-write. I’ve read about the ESPN editor, and it seems that he’s claiming that he had no idea what he had done, and that he feels bad.

“Chink in the armor” news anchor is married to a “chink”

Haha…well, actually I have no idea what ethnicity she is. But read on.

It looks like ESPN did take action on that embarrassing racial slur printed on ESPN mobile web. They fired the person responsible for calling Jeremy Lin or his performance a “chink” on their mobile headline, and they suspended Max Bretos who said the word “chink” verbally (see the clip above).

So why does one get fired while another gets suspended? Well, Bretos is married to an Asian woman, therefore he can’t be racist!

ESPN reports on Lin performance with the headline “Chink in the Armor”

Jeremy Lin loses one, and ESPN sticks it to him–and us. According to their ESPN mobile headline reporting the Knicks’ loss to the Hornets, they offered the headline “Chink in the Armor,” with his name directly underneath. See picture above. As MMA star Nam Phan once said, “Asian brother can’t get no love!

Fighting, Basketball, and Asian Masculinity

These guys are fighting, but few would call this "masculine."

I’ve been making a transition from MMA to basketball. I have to admit that basketball has some key advantages for spectators over MMA:

1. It’s a team sport
2. A player can’t lose his entire career by forgetting to keep his hands up once
3. A player plays more than three times a year
4. There’s a lot less luck involved

Anyhoo, fighting vs. basketball:

Jeremy Lin is just like YOU

For those of you who tuned in for the Knicks vs. Raptors game tonight, you saw this. Knicks down by three, Jeremy Lin ties it up with a three point play in the last minute or so, scoring while drawing a foul and sinking the extra point. I missed the first half, but I think this was the first time during at least the second half when the Knicks had as many points as the Raptors. In the final ten seconds or so, Lin got the ball, dribbled to let the clock run, and with just a few seconds left, he squares off against Jose Calderon and shoots over him for the three. Jesus Christ. I was thinking, “WTF are you doing? It’s tied! You need to drive and draw a foul!” But Lin sunk that basket, so obviously he knew his own basketball skills better than I do.

Actors, Actresses, and Responsibility

In the midst of all this Jeremy Lin talk, there was another Asian American battle going down in the blogosphere last week. Everyone was talking about the xenophobic Superbowl ad, which led some to question who the actress is and what the hell she was thinking. Lawrence O’Donnell called the actress out in the video above, saying, “I’ve done things in show business…that I’m not proud of, but I’ve never done anything that I’m ashamed of.” AngryAsianMan found out that the actress was a 21-year-old woman named Lisa Chan…and I don’t know what happened after that.

Reality Check: Jeremy Lin is a big guy

America loves underdogs, which is why the movie “Rudy” became so big. The movie was a feel-good flick, based on a true story about Dan “Rudy” Ruettiger, a 5’6, 165 lb. diminutive kid who loves football and dreams of playing for Notre Dame. According to the movie, Rudy goes to great lengths to first get to Notre Dame, and then he works super hard to at least practice with the big guys. Finally in the closing sequence when Notre Dame is far ahead, the coach allows him to play one time, and Rudy manages to sack the quarterback. My business coach recommended a book called StrengthsFinder 2.0 that sums it up well (p.4):

Jeremy Lin: Our Generation’s Joe Louis

Jeremy Lin scored 38 points tonight, a career-time high. I watched it live with my family. Jeremy and his team beat Kobe, the fourth Knicks victory in a row.

Holy Jesus, Jeremy

I had a long discussion with an Asian American friend today whose religious view are similar to mine–i.e. they’re not existent. She asked me what I though of Jeremy Lin, and I said that his accomplishments are great for Asian Americans. I asked her what she thought, and she said she couldn’t get over the Christian thing. Normally I’d have to agree, but man, I may have to convert after the video above. As my old pastor said, “Can I hear an amen?”

By the way, this was the top link for “Jeremy Lin” on my google search: Asian Americans energized in seeing Knicks’ Jeremy Lin play.

Seeking Asian Female

Seeking Asian Female Trailer from Seeking Asian Female Documentary on Vimeo.

Got this from Alpha/Mojo. I couldn’t tell if it was real or acted, but it looks like it’s real. It’s premiering at South by Southwest. As much as I question supporting this kind of thing, it does look from the trailer that it will work out fine. Dude seems nice enough. Older, but nice enough.

Here’s the description from their website:
