These guys are hilarious! I have to say, if I were a woman, I’d probably just stick around for the punchlines.

Check out this one too. “Worst wingman ever!”

The Death of Private Danny Chen

Diane asked me to post this story: Soldier’s Death Raises Suspicions in Chinatown. It’s sad. Private Danny Chen died of a gunshot wound, and the army is saying that it may have been a suicide, even though many people don’t believe he was suicidal. There is evidence that Chen was racially harassed while serving. They are conducting an investigation into his death.

The article says:

For decades, Asian-Americans have had an uneasy relationship with the military, enlisting at lower rates than other ethnic groups.

Don’t Check Asian

Thank you, Dali, for sending this article: Some Asians’ College Strategy: Don’t Check Asian. The article interviews some hapa Asian women with White last names (because their fathers are White) who decided to better their chances of getting into good colleges by checking the White box or not checking a race at all on the application. We’ve seen people who are full Asian actually change their last names to get around admission policy racism, but it’s probably a LOT easier to just be born with a White last name. What this also means is that if you’re an Asian American female who wants to do what’s best for your kids, it might make sense to just join the Club.

Chink by Koji Steven Sakai and Quentin Lee

I got this from Koji Steven Sakai. They’re making a slasher movie called Chink, and they’re looking to raise $10k. Learn more here.

Chink is a slasher movie with a message. With this film, we intend to explore issues about racial identity and self-hate, but stories about identity politics don’t have to take themselves so seriously. They can have blood, guts, and sex too.

Chico Wang

Chico Wang

There’s some kind of Facebook application that shows what my friends read. I don’t know if they elect to show the world what they read or whether it’s one of those apps that downloads itself automatically.

Anyway, some of my friends were reading about James Deen, who’s a really young skinny Jewish male porn star whom (apparently) women like to watch. He’s more of a girl’s fantasy than a man’s fantasy, which is why he is popular with teenaged girls. So I was reading down the article, which led me to another article about Deen, and this article said:

The Hoodwinking of Asian America

"“I had read nothing like this before, so it almost feels like I’ve lived my life to this point in preparation for this role.” --Actress Jennifer Lim

I saw this yesterday. It’s about David Henry Hwang’s Chinglish, and it was one of the most e-mailed articles. Thank goodness it was Thanksgiving, and I knew better than to let the orientalists ruin my day. Even after all these years, I’m always surprised at the propaganda that certain Asian American playwrights and film producers throw at us.

Lawyers, Law School, and Law Salaries

Lawyer training takes place at the firm, not the university

Two interesting articles about law and lawyering in the NY Times.

The first was an article about how law schools focus on theory rather than how to be a lawyer. Lots of law schools hire professors who have never practiced law, and often law clients wind up paying for a new lawyer’s on-the-job training. It has always been like this, but it’s more of an issue in recent days because: a) clients don’t want to spend the money anymore, and b) many law students are having trouble finding work these days and paying off those big student loans.

Reverse Racebending

I heard about Quentin Lee’s Today Has Been Weird from AngryAsianMan. It’s a short film, and it’s good: see the entire short movie above. It is based on a real life incident where a young 19 year Asian American boy named Simon Sek Man Ng blogged about his sister’s ex-boyfriend knocking on his door. The boyfriend ended up killing both Simon and his sister. The police used to information from his blog to find his killer.

“Hypochondriacs Buy More Books Than Sick People.”

I’ve been attending online “webinars” this week, learning about the publishing industry and social media. I’ve learned tons of interesting things about e-publishing, traditional publishing, Twitter, Facebook, and everything. Man, online learning really is the way of the future. I got to learn all this without even flying to New York.

Asian Americans and Asian Australians

Check out Eurasian Sensation’s recent article in Peril Magazine where he talks about the differences between Asian Americans and Asian Australians. Check out the views that I shared, and tell me if I’m wrong or right about our culture. It’s good stuff, and it’s very good for both Asian Americans and Asian Australians to think about. The more knowledge we have, the more possibilities we’re able to see for our respective cultures.
