The Trial of Danny Chen’s Abusers: In the U.S. or Afghanistan? / Killing a Man with his own tongue

Su Zhen Chen (right), mother of Pvt. Danny Chen

Thanks, American Girl, for sending this MSNBC article: Slain Chinese-American GI’s family wants soldiers tried in U.S. As you know, we’ve been following this case, in which Chinese American soldier Danny Chen was hazed by his army comrades. He eventually either killed himself or was killed by his colleagues. Eight soldiers have been charged in his death, with the most serious charges being manslaughter and negligent homicide against five of these soldiers. It appears that this is the first time manslaughter and negligent homicide charges have arisen from hazing in the U.S. military.

Gordon Hirabayashi, Civil Rights Leader, Dies at 93

Gordon Hirabayashi

Gordon Hirayabayashi, one of three resisters to the Japanese American internment, has died at 93. It was announced by Jay Hirabayashi, his son, who also said that his mother Esther, from whom Gordon was divorced, died the same day, about ten hours later. See the NY Times obituary here. Check this out:

When the West Coast curfew was imposed, ordering people of Japanese background to be home by 8 p.m., Mr. Hirabayashi ignored it. When the internment directive was put in place, he refused to register at a processing center and was jailed.

Cheap Bites with Eddie Huang

My aunt is a friend of Eddie Huang and asked me to spread the word. Sunday, January 1st, at 8 pm is the world premiere of Eddie’s show Cheap Bites on The Cooking Channel, in which he goes around and samples cheap but good food. My home doesn’t have The Cooking Channel, but if you have it, check it out. It’s awesome that an Asian American is getting his own show. We’ve only got the Food Network at our house, and outside of Iron Chef Chairman Mark Dacascos and Judy Joo from the Next Iron Chef (whom I mentioned in passing on the Clara Shih post), we’ve got no one. Diversity!

Military Hazing and Race and Religion

Check out Jeff Yang’s excellent Wall Street Journal piece on military hazing, especially in light of the recent incidents with Pvt. Danny Chen and Lance Corporal Henry Lew: Afghanistan Hazing Echoes ‘A Few Good Men.’

Jeff interviews Lieutenant Dan Choi, who says:

“You now have a much less diverse army, one whose culture is very southern, very Christian and very white,” says military activist and former Army Lieutenant Dan Choi. “And anyone who’s a minority in that culture has to accept that they’re an outsider if they want to survive, and try their best to fit in. If you’re different in any regard, you stick out. And the Asian saying applies: The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.”

The Purpose of Asian American Studies

In another internet group, someone posted the following article: Has Asian American Studies Failed? Take a look at it. It’s an article by a professor of Asian American Studies who argues that maybe Asian American studies has failed, since Asian Americans don’t seem to be shaping the public dialogue. This was the very first topic I ever blogged about. Back to my roots, baby.

“Hollywood is race-blind”

Dan Lin and Lionel Wigram

Thanks to ML who sent this profile of Dan Lin, graduate of Harvard Business School and now a successful Hollywood producer: From Harvard Business School to Sherlock Holmes Producer. Asian Americans always wonder how they can best succeed in a world that seems to be hostile to Asian American inclusion, but fortunately, according to Dan Lin, Hollywood is actually race-blind:

Lin, who is a board member for the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE) and a mentor with the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM), says he sees more Asian Americans in front of the camera as actors. However the producer says he would like to see more Asian Americans behind the cameras in Hollywood.

The Shanghai Hotel (Review of Trailer)

I love the beginning of this trailer. They start talking about human trafficking and how bad it is, like they’re performing some kind of public service or something. Then all of a sudden, they cut to some half-nekkid Asian women and good ol’ Asian thugs! They’ve got an oily White dude getting all horny with handcuffs in front of Eugenia Yuan, and some mean and violent yakuza (oh wait…is that Japanese?). They’ve also got some Black guys in it, although I’m not sure how they’re related to the rest of the movie. (You can guess this movie is written and produced by a Black guy (Jerry Allen Davis) because most White Orientalist writers seem to forget Black people exist when it comes to half-dressed Asian prostitutes and violent Asian thugs.)

Finally, a Community Victory!

Check out Clara Shih‘s speech above. This post was originally going to be about Judy Joo, one of the judges on the Next Iron Chef, who is attractive, accomplished, Asian female, and like the vast majority of AF in the public eye, married to a guy who lacks melanin. I had a long post written from last week about how our individuals get victories, and how I’m happy for their victories, but how we never get community victories, since they all marry White. I was going to say that I was happy for them, but there was never anything for the Asian man because da’ Chinaman need not apply when it comes to love with China-women.
