In this video, Republican Congressman Randy Neugebauer berates a Park Service worker for preventing some World War II veterans from seeing the WWII memorial. All day yesterday, the conservative talk show hosts were going off on Obama, chastising him for putting barricades up and preventing people from seeing exhibits that were closed due to the government shutdown. The conservative talking heads didn’t mention that these barricades were necessary to prevent vandalism and that it costs money to have staff on hand to maintain the memorials, but instead they went about attacking the Obama Administration over a freeze on spending caused by a shutdown that the Republican-led House of Representatives started. The Republicans forced the government to close, and now some of them are angry that they aren’t getting the government services that they want.
Now some of my Republican friends are saying that they blame Obama for the shutdown. After all, he won’t “negotiate.” My perspective is this: Obamacare is already the law. There’s nothing to negotiate on that end. They passed it, he signed it, and the Supreme Court approved it. The Republicans who don’t want to fix our broken healthcare system have lost. Get over it. To pull down the entire government over one law is to hold the entire country hostage. We all lose when people don’t accept defeat gracefully.
Now that’s not to say that the Democrats are angels either. There is a lot of fat to cut. If the Repubs need to bring home a win, instead of holding Obama hostage over Obamacare, why not take him to task over ridiculous government entitlements, overpaid school administrators, and other spending outrages?
