ESPN reports on Lin performance with the headline “Chink in the Armor”

Jeremy Lin loses one, and ESPN sticks it to him–and us. According to their ESPN mobile headline reporting the Knicks’ loss to the Hornets, they offered the headline “Chink in the Armor,” with his name directly underneath. See picture above. As MMA star Nam Phan once said, “Asian brother can’t get no love!

I’m usually inclined to give people the benefit of the doubt, but in this case I’m not sure. This just seems a bit coincidental–you don’t usually see that term in print around other professional athletes. I think every Asian American male has been called a “chink” at some point in his life (usually as a prelude to violence), so I’m not sure the “I didn’t know” excuse works either. I think most likely some smug ESPN writer thought he was being clever. If you agree with me, get activist and tell someone you know.

Whatever your thoughts are, sound off, or vote on my poll:

  1. F. Lee says:

The last time I heard someone using “Chink” was soldiers in Vietnam referring to the enemy Viet Cong and North Vietnamese. That was in 1967. And before that in the early 50′s as a Chinese American growing up in Mississippi .

Even when I was in Marine Corps boot camp where some of the foulest language ever invented by DI’s, was this disparaging term used on me. And DI’s have a penchant to extract the worst insults ever. My, how “far” we’ve come…

How ESPN could possibly not see the racial undertones in the title is beyond me. This just goes to show that (in America) when it comes to being non-racist and avoiding possibly sounding racists all you have to do is just not use the N-word (blacks) then S-word or wetback for Hispanics and that’s about it no one else need considering. Repeat after me, WTF!

PS. When I first came across the article my initial reaction was “that was quick” and “let me guess; the Knicks lost”
Same old BS just a new target to sling shot it against.

  3. Fun9876 says:

How is that any different from the comments I read on this blog? If course the audience size is different but the attitude is still there. I have been called a cracker, white nerd, Gollum, etc. It was only after my repeated criticisms that you finally rebuked a certain commenter.

  4. King says:

    @ Fun9876

Are you comparing a national sports media network headline to comments you read from individual posters on a blog site?

  5. King says:

And also by the talking head – just to drive the point home!

  6. Fun9876 says:

    King,

Yes, but I pointed out the (obvious) difference in audience; my point was the attitudes of certain people right here is similar to the attitudes to certain people at the powerful ESPN.

  7. King says:

^^ Not just in audience size but in overall responsibility. Also, headlines about Lin were completely unprovoked.

  8. Raguel says:

  23. Blacklisted says:

It’s great that we are now focusing on the establishment and not those within the APA communities with barely a voice, especially the ones that are near powerless. When an entire community campaigns against one particular individual that has artistic merits, whether insignificant to some or not, it speaks volumes about them as a whole.

Wen Ho Lee once wrote a book called “My Country Versus Me” — where he recounts his struggles with the federal government bringing charges upon him with little to no merit. They embarrassed him, sold him to the media with a noose around his neck, and then turned his entire community against him. He was accused of spying and selling highly classified intelligence to China. He wasn’t born here, but he was loyal, defiant, and unapologetic. In the end, as it turns out, they were wrong. They apologized to him — Bill Clinton did, even in front of a national stage.

So typical of us Americans. Always picking on the defenseless. There are bigger forces to deal with than just one person with a world wide web connection. Pathetic, if you ask me.

Just found out ESPN anchor Max Bretos (the other guy that used that the “Chink in the Armor” phrase) is married to an asian women. What are the chances, eh??

    Here is his comment:

On February 18, 2012, Bretos used the term “chink in the armor” in reference to New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin, an Asian, while on air as a ESPNEWS anchor. He was suspended 30 days. “My wife is Asian, would never intentionally say anything to disrespect her and that community,” apologized Bretos on Twitter.

And a piture with his wife and son.

  26. Mojo Rider says:

This goes to show the depth of cultural insensitivity that Asians are up against. It doesn’t matter if his wife is Asian, but I’ll accept that he had no intentional disrespect. He does have, however, a good deal of ignorance. I was watching ESPN after the Knicks lost to the Hornets and when he said it, my first reaction was, “C’mon, man, you gotta be kidding me!”

I don’t know if he thought it was witty sort of play on words or what but some copy editor or Bretos himself should’ve taken a step back and said, “Is this the right kind of pun or play on words we should be using?”

If anything, maybe these kinds of incidents are useful in that it brings about greater awareness to the vast ignorant masses about what’s acceptable/unacceptable when it comes to Asians. We shouldn’t have to be responsible for non-Asians education or cultural awareness, but unfortunately, as a marginalized minority group, we have to be in some regards.

    Wonderwall,

Calling someone a “negro?” Sorry, not cool. Not allowed either.

You seem to be confused. I wrote “Negroricechaser please” in response to his silly, overwrought comment. It is a play on the black expression “n***** please” that is made in response to a black person’s foolish beliefs.

Considering that you quoted from the Daily Show the comment – “YOU have a dream? Knickbocker, please!” I mistakenly though some of you might have figured it out.

My on going attempt to communicate with the special ed kids on here marches on.

  35. trolldetector says:

@wonderwhy . no, but ill make you cry you little white zionist troll

  36. bigWOWO says:

    Wonderwall,

That’s not at all a play on words. It’s nothing at all like the Jon Stewart joke. You called him a racial slur. That’s not allowed.

  37. bigWOWO says:

    Wonderwall,

I’ll say what I said to Fun. If you’re not fitting in here–and in your case, you can’t seem to follow the rules and just get carried away by your hatred of black people–just go elsewhere. There are millions of other websites you can go to.

  38. Wonder Why says:

dollcollector, why do you never discuss any issue but instead resort to personal attacks by calling people White, or zionist or troll or all three?

You call people zionists when the subject doesn’t even involve Israel or Jews.

You know Jews love Chinese food and support Chinese restaurants. And they don’t have a history of robbing and killing Chinese delivery workers, unlike some people.

  39. Wonder Why says:

bigWOWO, what I wrote was a play on words, it was related to the Larry Wilborne joke you referenced yet didn’t understand. It wasn’t a racial slur. You didn’t get it so now you are expressing faux moral outrage in order to protect your sensitive black internet friend.

Bit of an embarrassing over reaction on your part.

  40. King says:

WonderWhy, you haven’t come up with any substantive argument in weeks… You keep making ridiculous statements—you’re basically a dummy. The problem is that you’re a bit to dull-witted to even know that you’re a dummy.

Wonder why you’re still here? What’s the attraction?

  41. bigWOWO says:

Oh, I totally got his joke–which was why I quoted it (duh!). In the skit though, you’ll notice that there wasn’t a White nationalist calling a black man “negro.” I could tell you this 100 times, but from what I’ve seen so far, you’ll never get it.

  42. trolldetector says:

One of the crazy result of Linsanity is all the obscure basketball trivia that I picked up in the media, including the one about how Jews had dominated pro-basketball.

Here’s what a New York Daily News sports editor Paul Gallico wrote in the mid 1930s, the game “appeals to the Hebrew with his Oriental background [because] the game places a premium on an alert, scheming mind and flashy trickiness, artful dodging and general smartalecness.”

  48. bigWOWO says:

“zionist-owned america would be sunk in even more debt than it is”

…do not reflect that well on you. I know you probably don’t give a shit about offending people, or about looking like Mel Gibson Mark II, but seriously, at least try staying on topic.

  51. N says:

    @es
While we’re on the topic on Jewish. Can someone elaborate on how the ‘state of Israel’ was established and why the US had been unconditionally supporting their ethnic cleansing for decades?

Assume the states are not really unionist owned, of course

  52. N says:

    Zionist-owned, I meant.

  53. @ N:
No, I’m really not inclined to talk about anything involving the term “Zionists”.

Anyways, gee, how about that Jeremy Lin and that whole “chink in the armor” thing?

  54. N says:

    @es

I don’t understand why you’re so elusive on this topic. Zionism exists and the states had, at the very least, been indirectly supportive of it unconditionally for decades.

    But back to Jeremy Lin:

“I’m not sure what’s deceptive,” Lin said. “But it could be the fact I’m Asian-American. But I think that’s fine. It’s something that I embrace, and it gives me a chip on my shoulder. But I’m very proud to be Asian-American, and I love it.”

  58. @ trolldetector:
“stop being a yes man , you damn well know im not being racist. im just trolling back at the troll who refuses to stop trolling, if you cant see, that you need to wake up.”

No I don’t know. I don’t know who you are or what you think, aside from noting that you seem to bring up Jews and Zionism every chance you get. In any case, Wonder Why’s comments are frequently dumb enough that they can be attacked based on their content, regardless of what his ethnicity is, or what you think it is.

    @ N:
I’m evasive on this topic because it is completely unrelated to this thread, and because personally I’m not interested in hearing comments about how Jews rule the world or whatever. I’m not saying that you are going to make those comments, but someone will…

  59. N says:

    @ES

May not on this thread, but what I don’t get is, why are people so frightened to recognise that Muslims were actually the victims during the Israel-Palestine war? It’s funny that western countries love to bag China and its human rights issue and constantly reminding Japanese of their war crimes, but when it comes to western atrocities, it’s as though it’s all never happened.

Just because Byron’s friends are –ish, why should I have almost gotten accidentally ? caught in the spamdetector speaking my mind, whilst wonder spew and his various incarnations of intellectualist alteregos has freely been allowed to infiltrate continue to contribute nothing to an ethnic/asian blog .

    Why? I wonder why.

the question hasnt been answered – what the F does a non-ethnic – yes –ish trolls cant be majority AND the minority…or can they?( oh wait i forgot we arent allowed to discuss that its called anti-semitic even tho bombing the shit out of palestianian kids is called heroic) troll have to contribute on an ethnic blog? apart from snobbish condescending comments towards blacks and asians. I really dont get it.

@eurasian. Just face it the fact you wont question the status quo means you ARE the status quo. But then again you are half -white, so you have half white privelege. Or do you get to represent whites AND ethnics? Again, am i being racist, or am i just speaking facts?

Buddy up with wonder troll , ban pro-ethnic viewpoints and this blog may as well become an online starbucks cafe for white/white wannabe bourgoisis.

  62. King says:

“But then again you are half -white, so you have half white privelege. Or do you get to represent whites AND ethnics? Again, am i being racist, or am i just speaking facts?”

Actually it doesn’t work like that. You are either “visually White” or you are “other.”

  63. Raguel says:

Everybody is part of the status quo, TD, even the dissenters. Nothing is a better stark reminder of this than Soros-funded liberal democracy activists “occupying” a few places and then winding down on cue with zero objectives being met.

Your calling out of ES is misplaced and still inappropriate. Unless you could tell us what made you suspect Wonder Why is jewish or a zionist, then you would have brought up his race or political affiliations apropos of nothing. What makes this troll jewish, instead of other permutations of trolldom such as the ghost of Cho Seung Hui or one of those outcast pale white HBD proponents with no life?

As for the zionist influence in American politics, this is not exactly news. There could be any number of reasons why a person might censor himself when it comes to this issue. But I suggest that a particular reason may be when what should have been criticism of ideas and policy becomes instead a very broad attack on the basis of race.

It’s a different thing if someone actually NAMED the various lobbies and dramatis personae behind the scenes and the causes they are actively involved in and who they are connected to.

I will leave it to you to decide which approach is more useful.

  64. N says:

  65. @ TD:
Fine, if you want to make everything about Zionists for some reason, suit yourself. For the record, I have many problems with things Israel does. I’m just puzzled why you have some pathological need to bring Jewishness into conversations that are about something else. It’s like WW’s odd need to make the Jeremy Lin story into some parable about black men’s cocks.

It bugs me that your answer to “open season on blacks and Asians” is to make it open season on Jews as well. Everyone else here is tearing into WW because he seems like a douche, not because he seems Jewish.

“Or do you get to represent whites AND ethnics?”

Bonding over religion and new found fame. Lin’s gonna get smacked around if he over plays the public Christianity. The petty name calling of his Asianness is weak and makes the name callers look corny but he could be set up for more abuse if he doesn’t shut up about the religious views.
