Pantene Ad

I saw the above viral video reviewed at CNN here.  (See the YouTube version here if the embedded video is down.)  It’s a Pantene commercial, created by Pantene, about a deaf girl who fights social stigma and overwhelming odds to become a master violinist.  I think it’s in Thai.  It’s a pretty amazing ad.

They must have either hired some real Thai screenwriters or screenwriters who lived in Asia to do this.  It looks just like those K-Pop and J-Pop videos you see on the web, with the story, expressions, fights, thugs, etc.  I think culturally it’s hard for a writer to recreate that feeling in video unless you live there and breathe in that culture.

Oh…and that girl has great hair.  It’s the Pantene, I guess.  The performance scene was quite amazing–shampoo commercials usually don’t showcase hair that way.

I apologize for posting this here, but I can’t seem to think of a better location for it. I’m wondering if Dialectic from thefighting44s.com is still writing anywhere. I found your page and I’m glad I did, but I’m curious as to whether that guy has another blog or something. Thank you.

    No worries.

No, he doesn’t blog anymore. If D does start blogging again, I’ll probably be linking it off the front page here.

Johann Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” sounds great anywhere, even on YouTube. But a 4 minute hair product commercial, I’ve never seen. Well done and unique in every way!
(Beautiful hair, even if the young lady doesn’t really play the violin)

The shots were beautiful. I also loved how the theme of hair comes together with the (wheat?) fields and the butterfly, like everything was in motion.

  5. mT says:

The fields and butterflys are supposed to represent the visuals that the deaf girl sees when she plays. Because remember she’s deaf. So she can only visualize what the music sounds like….which brings me to this point. How can a fucking deaf girl play violin?! I would be pissed too if I lost to her in competition. That’s bullshit!! She ain’t deaf. LOL. On an unrelated note. It’s Friday!! Yay!!!

B, that was a great video. Thanks for posting!

Glad you liked it, Winnie! Hope everything is going well!

I have seen some four minute ads from Thailand that in my opinion, were more like amazing short films. The first one I saw was for life insurance and I thought it was a short film contest entry.
My favourite ad of all time out of Asia, has to be “The Love of Tan Hong Ming”…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBwzrVJDSBw

  9. Hm, nice post, I just now saw it.

Oh, Ye of little faith!!! Deaf people can play the violin (even though the girl in the commercial was acting), people who use wheel chairs can dance breathtakingly, people who are blind can create visual art that sells for thousands of dollars, and people who are developmentally disabled are capable of profound, conscious expressions of beauty and can lead very fulfilling lives. I have seen it with my own eyes, heard it with my own ears, and felt it with my whole heart. It’s a huge reason that IQ and aptitude tests really don’t tell us much about what a person will actually do.

Interestingly enough, a large group of people in China seem to be leading the front of the pack with this idea that disability is only in the mind of the beholder. The first two are them:

    @RiceCakeRabbit

Heh, sorry to be picky here.
Murderball is actually Wheelchair Rugby, which is a totally sport to Wheelchair Basketball.
But I think Wheelchair Rugby is one of the best sports to watch for the Olympics (they are absolutely crazy)!

  11. Murderball is actually Wheelchair Rugby

    Heh…yeah, that’s what I meant, Rugby…

    :D

ok, wait. sentimental AND hilarious, but maybe my sense of humor is beyond twisted.
she’s wearing a hearing aid, so how hearing impaired is she supposed to be?
so, the moral of the story is: use pantene, swing your hair like a deadhead dancing, & anything is possible??!!!
