Michelle Kwan’s Second Act

Saw this article today about Michelle Kwan.  Although she has left the highest levels of figure skating, she’s still moving on ahead.  She is currently studying at Tufts in a two year program in politics or international relations.  She already has work experience in the field, working for Condoleeza Rice as a public diplomacy envoy and a representative on the presidential council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition.  According to the article, she is becoming an expert on North Korea.

I’ve always wondered about professional athletes.  In general, I think it’s good to make one’s name early in life–it gives one that much more freedom to do great things later in life.  Of course it’s easy to rest on one’s laurels when one has been one of the most talked about athletes in American Winter Olympics history, but it looks like Michelle is keeping her professional momentum going.  Good for her.

Heh, Michelle Kwan brings back weird memories.
I used to watch a lot more Women’s figure skating than I should. And after watching a really good documentary on ESPN, I started barracking for Irina Slutskaya (who was brilliant and in my view, a superior skater to both Kwan and of course Hughes).

And since she and Michelle Kwan were neck to neck in a lot of competitions, I always saw Michelle as the ‘foe’. And I still think that Slutskaya was robbed at the 2002 Olympic games.

When I was a young boy, I use to fantasize about her. I would kiss her photo in the magazine. And worship the ground she walked on. I still would like to meet her. Maybe, I should attend the same school she attends with the hope of meeting her.
