How to Spend Money

I’ve been meaning to post this for quite some time.  The NY Times had an excellent article a while back about how to maximize happiness when spending money.  Since I’ve had quite a few discussions on happiness, and since we’re always talking about money and how it affects lives, I thought it was relevant.

Here’s the kicker:

On the bright side, the practices that consumers have adopted in response to the economic crisis ultimately could — as a raft of new research suggests — make them happier. New studies of consumption and happiness show, for instance, that people are happier when they spend money on experiences instead of material objects, when they relish what they plan to buy long before they buy it, and when they stop trying to outdo the Joneses.

If you’ve got extra money, spend it on experiences.  Give it to charity and watch while they smile, or take a vacation.  Think hard about something before buying it.  And don’t try to keep up with your neighbor.

hey, what are you talk’n about. A new lens would make me PLENTY happy right about now!

But then again, the prospect of new experience with said lens probably still supports your theory :) .

Nooo….!! Spend money on designer purses! TZ purses to be specific.

Byron my comment keeps disappearing. No worries. It wasn’t that substantive of a comment anyway.

  4. tz says:

Oh okay, THAT one shows up, but none of my initial intended comments show. Great. Let’s try this again. I said nooooo don’t tell people this… tell them to spend money on designer handbags… TZ handbags, that is.

  5. Ben II says:

if your handbags can help me shoot at 85mm at f/1.4, count me in!!!

what am i supposed to do with a handbag….give it to my wife?!!?! lol.

Sorry about that, TZ. I just approved it. I think the spam filter catches messages that try to sell stuff like Viagra, prescription meds, mortgage rates, handbags…. :) But for the record, I think a good handbag is important. As Claude Levi-Strauss said, “Always dress [or accessorize] for the occasion!”

@ Ben II: My handbags aim to bring solidarity to the Asian American community. As you can see, I’ve been drinking the same Kool-Aid.

  8. Ben II says:

@TZ – LOL. Hey now, I’m on your side in case you haven’t figured it out yet :) .

It wasn’t a jab at all. This kool-aid here is pretty darn good. I wouldn’t sing “We are the World” though. I’ve always kinda preferred “This land is your land, this land is my land…”
